I think the fridge is killed

Last night we started to smell something hot. Not the wood stove, not the space heater in the back bedroom, not the cat... Finally I determined the smell is comming from the back of the fridge. It smelled like when the belt burns out on the vacuum cleaner, like burning rubber. I pulled out the fridge vacuumed the coils and everything around the compressor, which was very hot. I unplugged it and stuck a couple of frozen 2 liter bottles of water in there to keep it cool overnight. I tried plugging it in again this morning and with in 20 seconds that stinch of burning/melting had again filled the kitchen.
I think it is shot any ideas from you all?

Shelly

That smell typically is associated by me to be the start circuit for the compressor. There should be a small usually black box clipped to the compressor. With the fridge unplugged take the box cover off and have a look/see/smell. Those parts are cheap! PS....was the small fan at the coils you dusted running?

Agman, dh called the appliance repairf place today, and he said just that. The relay for the compressor is shot. That switch is about 50.00, but a lot cheaper than a new fridge.
Thanks.

Shelly,
Get the part number and buy the component you need off the internet. Hubby can install it. Part will be around $20
