Splitting wood is great exercise!

I'm not a very big person and I like splitting wood with a maul....ash splits real easy and birch is such a pain! Birch smells awesome burning though!

I did about 1/2 cord by hand and then for time saving sake borrowed my dad's gas splitter. We use about 5 cord a year and had 10 cord of butt logs delivered a month or so ago....my husband runs the chainsaw...the kids and I split and stack. We are 2/3 done and plain sick of the wood pile!

I split both ways...Green wood is much easier to split (with a maul) when it's below freezing...I'm currently sitting on almost ten cords...na na na na boo boo

Wow pheasant that's a lot of wood. I am jealous. Some of what we have to split is really hard wood. The axe just didn't cut it.

Is that a pony tail I see on hubby? tell him I think it's cute

Splitting wood by hand is an awesome total body workout that yuppies pay big bucks to replicate in their gyms. Too bad we can't cash in on that--we can be the 50$ an hour personal trainer--"swing from yer abs!" "yer only through a quarter cord, you sissy!" "use your legs!"

you need a maul for the hard stuff, and really, power swing from your abs and core, your arms are for aiming and control of the arc. It sounds funny maybe but you know how they break boards in martial arts, something like how you imagine the power going through the board, not the power actually breaking the board? that mental stuff is just as useful. Nothing like splitting wood to get an education on grain and how a tree is made! (can you tell I spend a lotta time on this? )

ETA< didja know it's the hot new workout to carry rocks? you start with a pile of rocks and carry them one by one to make a new pile. OR you whack a tractor tire with a sledgehammer a gazillion times. I'm not joking this is real hot stuff!

ps, google "sledgehammer workout" and you'll even get some youtube videos if you need a visual aid hahahahahahahaha

I think this is hillarious--though you might be able to use it to get yourself in shape for splitting season. The guy is actually pounding sand

23 best sledgehammer workouts you've never seen
including "shoveling", "driving the fence post", "chopping wood"...betcha didn't know yer sledgehammer was so versatile! (actually there's a lot of good stuff in there)

THis guy has REALLY horrible form--sloppy and girly-man

I had never heard of such a thing as sledgehammer work outs. Interesting videos. You're right on the last guy's form. Terrible. Yep, Hubby has a pony tail. He's considering shaving the beard tho... We'll see.
