Copper sulfate in septic

We have had a problem with roots clogging our drain line to the septic tank in the past and had to snake it out. I want to put copper sulfate down the toilet to prevent it happening again. Will it do any harm to anything growing over the septic or drain field area or any animals that eat anything growing over the septic and drain field?

Thanks in advance for your help.

Jean

I'm guessing here but wouldn't copper sulfate kill a substantial amount of the needed bacteria in you septic tank? I think I'd attack the roots from the surface.

The info I read says that it does kill some of the bacteria you want but 15 days after using it things are back to normal.

Using copper sulphate is a "band-aide" measure and won't solve the problem; roots will continue to grow back and the "remains" will be "in the way".....presenting potential clogging problems for the future.
I'm guessing, but it sounds like your main line to the septic tank is probably made up of old clay tile and that the tree roots are growing into the gaps between them; seeking moisture. To solve this problem, it would be best to dig up the entire line and replace it with solid pvc pipe that is cemented at each joint; rendering it into ONE impenerable piece of pipe, that roots can't invade.

copperkid3---You are absolutely right, but will the "band-aid" do any harm while we wait to be able to make the real solution?
