Sorry, I was editing my post when you posted back. We always started our fire with cut up pieces of wax firestarters, then a little newspaper, kindling, and once it is going somewhat, we increasingly added larger pieces of wood. Soft first, then one big piece of hard wood once the stove was going. Use your control to allow more air in in the beginning and close it down as the fire gets going. Most stoves need a break in period when you first start it up each season. In other words, a small fire, then let it cool, and repeat. That will keep the metal from cracking. Please do be careful and read on the hearthside forum about using the stove. I always kept a thermometer on mine to control the temperature. You don't want a chimney fire.
