Dry Scalp Remedy?
Hey all,
I am waaaay to thrifty (read:CHEAP) to buy shampoo, let alone dandruff shampoo I use good ol' bar soap.
But that early winter dryness is really going to my head!
Anyone out there got a home-steader remedy for dry scalp?
Thanks!
Chris E.

I have bad scape problems and the only thing I have found to stop the itching is a shampoo with 0.5% Coal Tar in it. You should only need to use it once or twice a week (I have to use at least every other day).
Go to a Dollar General store and buy their genric T-gel, its called T+PLUS. If you can't find that Wal Mart has the same thing but its a bit more.

I have used vinegar on my melon and it works pretty well. Wet our head and rub it into the scalp, let sit for a few mins and wash out.

I do not know if there is any connection, but here is my experience. I had a scalp problem, where a crusty substance would build up then flake off. My self-diagnosis is hyperkeratosis. I would use coal tar shampoo to keep it under control.
I now make homemade peanut butter, with roasted peanuts and a little of salt, sometimes adding enough olive oil to help the mixture blend up. I normally eat it every morning for breakfast, and I have noticed that since doing so my scalp no longer gets flaky. The bottle of coal tar shampoo has been sitting unused in the bathroom for months. My theory (possibly flawed) is that the peanut oil helps with the scalp problem. Anyone out there have a more educated opinion?

I was going to say put the olive oil on your head
How many times a week do you wash your hair? It might help if you cut back how often you wash it. And try a milder soap if you have to use bar soap, tho I doubt it's actually thriftier to use soap instead of shampoo--I can get suave for a buck, and gee you've got hardly any hair to wash, you'd only need a few drops to get your hair clean(most people use waaayyyy too much shampoo). Can you get Dr Bronners? I love the feel of his mint soap(it's castille, isn't that olive based? it's mild).
But in a nutshell, quit washing your hair so much

But seriously, if you want to use something, why not use what is meant for the job. Olive oil has gotten dam expensive!

I use the same soap on my hair that I use on my body. I buy homemade goat milk soap from a friend locally plus a friend on another site. Love it. I also use apple cider vinegar and let it sit for a couple minutes. The reason I don't use shampoo is because I choose not to use chemicals, especially those known to be carcinogens. By the by, I agree with the Dr. Bronners. I use the unscented but it works great.

Oh, I would highly recommend crunchy (aka chunky) for its superior exfoliation properties!

I use apple cider vinegar as my "conditioner". Just put about a TBS into a cup of water and pour it over your head. Rub it in and rinse it out. I often wash my hair with either bar soap (homemade) or baking soda.

ya know, re bar soap...I scrub a TON of soap scum off of people's showers(housecleaning biz) and even over 2 weeks the build up is amazing with some soaps people use--I ca'nt imagine soap scum is healthyat all for a person's skin, and it may be what is making you itch? We use Ivory bar soap(but not for shampoo) and dont' get scum build up in our shower here at home.
Irish Spring or other "heavy duty deodorant" soaps seem to be the worst for scummy build up(ha, yeah I try to figure out what soap people use cuz I don't want a scummy body ).
