Anyone here work on Gas Stoves?

I recently aquired a Amana Gas Range. Its a older model, with a self-cleaning oven. The oven, tho, only heats to 160, and shuts down. (Its propane). I got it for my canning kitchen, cause its made real well for canning--but I would also like to use the oven.
Any idea(besides calling expensive repairman, to find out I cant afford to fix it)how to find out what I need to get it working? And if the oven CANT be fixed, is it safe to just use the burners?

There is a small bulbous thing in the oven part called a thermocouple. It sounds like it is bad. It is how the oven gas control knows when to shut down the gas and when to turn it back on to control the heat range. Can be purchased at a hardware store. It has a long skinny tube that connects to the oven control and that if located under the top usually. It usually can be removed and replaced by unscrewing the tube from the side of the thermostat and routing the thermocouple to the place where it was located originally located in the oven. Screw the top part back in place and that should be it. The burners operate by themselves and are just controlled just by the valve setting itself.
