Stone House Clean Up

Thought you might like to see what it looks like with all the junk removed. I posted a few more pictures. Hope they are clearer.

Hi Baba,

The house looks great! I wish you were closer to me, I have a couple of beautiful sinks that were given to me when friends remodeled!

The fact that the house has been stripped of it's copper tells me there is a thief in your neighborhood. He is probably watching your progress right now with the cleanup, and is anxiously awaiting the arrival of new supplies, appliances and anything else he can steal. Is there a way you could move to the property now, in a trailer or something, so you can be there physically? I think that would be a good deterrant to the local sticky fingers club. Well, that, and a big old dog!

Actually yes we do, and a dog too. We'll be moving the trailer to the property when we actually start to work on it. Right now we're not leaving anything for anyone to take. It just makes sense to not tempt people.

From visiting your website, it looks like your hubby is a talented woodworker! Could he replace the missing lower cabinet doors? It looks like they could be painted out after necessary repairs are made. Uppers don't need to be a perfect match. For a farmhouse look they could be beadboard or raised panels in a contrasting color, or a couple of doors with glass panels for the section where you keep your best dishes. Is the kitchen big enough for an island?

If you are looking to keep the historic character in your farmhouse kitchen, milkpaint is a neat way to go in painting out your cabinets. This site has pictires in the left side showing what historic colors on cabinets they probably made, but you can find nearly identical stock at most home improvement centers. And you can do the milk paint yourself!

This kitchen is a good example, and the cabinetry around the kitchen has several different finishes. It is really beautiful when it all comes together!

Wow Tator, thx for the links! Yes Hubby has done cabinetry and can make the doors. We found a great stove similiar to this style for free and can't wait to put it in our Stone House Farmhouse! I love the look of beadboard in a country kitchen setting. That is something we will be looking at for sure.

Before you use that cistern for rainwater collection, dump some water in there..wait just a few days..collect a sample and send it off to your local extension agency..It'll be good to know if anything has leached into it, been dumped into it, etc..before you get too far.

Don't know how many bathrooms are in this home..with the ones I've remodeled ( several 19th century and one gorgeous 18th century)..we put in half-baths so easily..locate sewer pipe/bathroom water drain pipes..run new pipes into those..run them along the wall..no need to open up an area..now just build a ceiling to floor "closet" right around those pipes/drain..then build a pretty ceiling to floor real closet..add toilet and a nice sink..some ceramic tiles..lighting ( same method used to hide wires) ..good tight door and voila..a half bath..

To visitors, it looks like an antique clothes closet..we've put these in kitchens, under stairs, bedrooms....
