Thinking of turning the cable tv off
My wife and I have been kicking around the idea of turning the cable off because we don't watch much tv,and everything that is on anymore is trash.I mean we were watching the news to see the weather and the commercials were all about Levitra, viagra and stuff like that. You cant turn it on anymore without seeing something like that.We have a 10yr old son that does not need to be seeing all the trash that comes on either. We do monitor what he watches, but even the cartoons have stuff in them. One of the cartoon channels we have has adult cartoons on starting at 10pmIf any of you have done this please let me know how it went and do you believe it was a good descion and why. Also was it hard for everyone to adjust to not having tv channels to watch.

We didn't have tv for years. The effect it had on the kids: they went outside to play, did not try to stay up late to watch tv, went to the library, were active in sports and theater, read books, never scheduled themselves around a tv program.
Besides, you can always get the shows you like on cd from netflex. That's how we watched the Sopranos.

If you like "old" prime time TV and/or movies, there's always www.netflix.com They have many of their movies where you can view immediately online now, as well. We pay $19 and change and watch all the oldie but goodie series and movies we want during the month. We had our cable off for a while, but then turned it back on. I am a SAHM and i enjoy the weather channel, TLC, A&E, Animal planet, Food Network and a couple of others. We are rethinking it, though, and may turn off cable again soon.

Just get Netflix, you can get all the shows but no commercials. There are literally thousands of shows and movies and the prices aren't bad per month, no contracts or anything you can always cancel.

Also, alot of those channels you like to watch are available to watch on the Internet. My satellite is currently off and I am keeping up with my favorite shows via their channels on the Internet. They are free of charge and you can watch them without all the annoying commercials.

We are with you. We only get 2 channels, no cable through here. When the digital comes through in Feb we will not be able to get anything from our antenna. We get 2 newspapers and figure we can check the net for more news. We also get Netflix and really enjoy it. Of course we have no children to complain about no TV. Like you, we are sick of disgusting commercials. They are embarassing if you have company and make you ill if you are eating. Our TV rarely is turned on before the 6pm news. Since we really aren't into sports, we won't miss that. Like some of you folks, we read alot. And on Friday a local library sells paperbacks for 10 cents and hardbacks for 25 cents. A dish would cost us in the neighborhood of $70 per month and we don't feel the cost justifies the enjoyment we would get.

My son had his cable disconnected last December. He got sick of all the Christmas commercials. Any programs he wants to watch he can get on the internet. The only program he's missed is Jeopardy.

I cancelled Dish earlier this year. Not much on for the price. Rather go to the library and pick up a movie if and when I'm in the mood. Get lots more done without the distraction.
There is also "free to air" satellite ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Free-to-air or search on "free to air" for more info) Lots of different stations depending on the band. A set up can run anywhere from $75-$500 depending upon the bells and whistles. Best part is there's no subsciption fee after that.

We haven't had TV since we moved to our cabin over four years ago. Our kids read a lot and spend time on hobbies. DW takes them to the library once a week to get books and a few videos. We also have Netflix and watch (mostly) old movies. My kids were recently asked what their favorite movies were and everyone they named was at least 50 years old!

Haven't bothered. Got friends and family with it. I do watch it for a bit when I visit, as does my son and wife. After a few hours, it gets old. A lot more chanels with still nothing worth watching. So I read or converse, which is much more satisfying.
My sons obsession with things like the cartoon network are reason enough to eschew pay tv services. Neither my wife nor I like what he's enthralled with. Get up boy, go outside and play!

So glad to see other people have cancelled their cable! We have a 10 yr old who was TV obsessed, a 5 yr old and a baby. We hated the idea of all the garbage coming into our house and we were PAYING for it. Unfortunately, we were paying for it in more ways than one. Try explaining all the gross pharmaseudical commercials to a 5 yr old. No one has missed it, especially the kids. We have replaced it with more family time. You can always rent a movie and do a movie night. No regrets!! Good luck.

We didn't hook up the TV for a year after we built our house, but we have Dish now. I have LOTS of friends who don't have cable or dish or an antenna. TV is used for movies only.
I could do without it, but I'd miss CSI.

I would love to turn our cable off for good also. It is just my husband and I and the cost is $60 a month with direct TV !! We only watch 2 shows a nights..news oriented..and that's it..of course more during the winter evenings a movie or 2 but recently got netflex so...But hubby has held back on shutting it off...I think it is mostly because he isn't a "reader" and it is very hard ...to cut the cord..after a lifetime of the boob tube being there. Perhaps I will speak again to him and see about getting the programs he watches on the internet..He does enjoy watch..The O'Reily Factor...at night..I need to check into more though. My opinion...Shut it Off !!!

I'm with Mezzogirl. HATED the idea of PAYING for the garbage to come into my private home. Got rid of Dish Network over four years ago, and have not missed it. It's only me, though, and I'm an avid reader. I don't think you'll be doing anyone any harm by getting rid of cable.

We are also considering it. We got rid of actual cable last year, but have the Dish stuff. We don't watch much at all any more. I would miss the western channel and Hallmark -especially through Christmas. Dh would miss the military and science channels. TV is something we do mostly just before retiring for the night. DS doesn't watch anything. It is hard to let go though.
