storage container cabins COOL!

I was out looking for a job today and happened upon a business that builds cabins and houses out of those huge metal storage containers. They are so cool. I got to go into two cabins but saw pictures of a really nice house (the longer container). They are quite affordable being under 20,000 completely move in ready. All plumbing and electric, fixtures, toilet, wood stove and air conditioner whole kit and cabodle! I showed some ladies at the workforce commision pics of the inside of it and they all thought it was a trailer home. I then showed the pic of the outside their jaw just dropped! OH man that was fun. Now I want one. BTW how does the state classify those. Their not mobile homes, they are not storage units. WHat are they?

I saw an article about a collage student who did some volunteer work down in Mexico - he was so upset with the poor living conditions that he started a project using old semi trailors and turning them into inexpensive houses for people in Mexico. tried to find the info but haven't been able to locate it.

I'd want a 40' one and either have it put on stilts or underground.

These look cool too, but at a more reasonable $9000. Probably a chunk of change to deliver anywhere, but it isn't like they can't be moved.

It would be great for a place you don't go to often. There would be no concern about it being torched, or broken into (at least not easily).

You can get a 40ft container for about $2000 plus shipping/crane service.
Most shippers have turnkey package container on your lot for $$3000-$3500.

A friend of mine is planning a barn made from shipping containers. Hopefully it will be going up either next fall or the following spring. Basically a U or |_| shaped structure composed of three large shipping containers with a rafter system and roof bolted to the top.

Best of all, since they're containers and he's not going to attach them to the ground he won't have to pay property taxes on a huge barn/storage building. The county assessor is gonna be soooo mad.....

When he gets it built I'll take some pictures.

Does anyone know where I can find some of these for sale? This would be a great solution to a sticky situation I find myself in...

For some reason they remind me of the shanty towns in Brazil.
Can you escape the container look and feel, without spending extraordinary amounts of money on furnishings?

This site has hundreds of configurations from cabins to villages and cities. All made from shipping containers.
Oh, for the record, they cannot be buried. Neither the roof nor the sidewalls are designed for the pressures. They will collapse.

yikes, I just checked with a place that sells them in Baltimore (closest port to me) and they want $2450 for the 20 footers.

Guess I need to shop a bit!

I am thinking one would make a great shed.

We were camping at Disney's Ft. Wilderness this weekend. They have cabins that rent for $200 per night. They look suspiciously like small mobile homes with log siding and lattice for skirting. If these container homes had siding applied, they would look like cabins or cottages.
