Some folks love it, and there are earthships in the area.

I always thought it was ugly, dusty, too hot/cold. I would rather actually be in the mountains or in the desert rather than half way between.

..............Thanks ! Weather shows to be fairly cool during dec and jan and I'm sure extra cold nights are below zero . Highs in July go up to 90 ish but don't last for long . How did\do you deal with extra low levels of humidity ; I'm thinking you're living in Trinidad , Co. currently ? , thanks , fordy

I used to pass thru 2x a week. Nice to visit, wouldn't want to live there. I would be concerned about water availability.

Hi Fordy.

I'll let ya know for sure after the first of the year- that's where we're headin'-Morarity/Edgewood area. Weather is similiar to what we get here in East TN, four seasons. Without the humidity, the heat doesn't feel so HOT and i'm told the cold doesn't either.

Windy and dusty, that's for sure, but i'm told there are pockets out there with a bit more protection.
Never heard of earthships there, that's more a Taos thing.

For ugly and dusty, ya gotta go to Alamogordo. NOT a fan of the area there.

Lots of horse activities and feed/tack stores in Moriarty. Best dang stuffed sopapillas in the WORLD at El Comedor in Moriarty (it's also the oldest operating neon sign on 66).

A quick trip to Alb, either right down 66 through Tijeras or on 40. I've been told there are some days the snow shuts the roads down into Alb from the east mountains.

Can be in Santa Fe or Alb in about 30 minutes or so for working purposes.

Alfalfa is the big hay crop out there.

Another homesteader, DanaMN has bought a house in Edgewood and recently returned from a trip out there. I can get you her contact info, if you'd like.

Here's a link to the paper: http://www.mountainviewtelegraph.com/

Seems VERY community oriented- as a matter of fact, so many things seem to end in a barn dance.... when reading the paper out loud to one another, Greg and I finish the other's story with "and a barn dance" lol

You can also link to the Albuquerque Journal from there as well.

Good luck and feel free to email me I can help- anmlfrm@comcast.net

We went to Moriarty to buy a 6 wheel ATV. The people had raised their family there, but leaving now, they said it had turned into a major meth making area, and getting dangerous....lots and lots of crime fro the meth-heads.

..................Thanks RRR , I've been up and down I40 numerous times over the years but can't remember ever stopping there . Actually , the east side of Abbyququ is alot more scenic than the west side . I sent an email on a "fixer-upper" to a RE agency but no response . The elevation average seems to be around 6200 msl which isn't to bad . My interest lies in its close proximity to colorado where the really scenic mining roads exist like no place else in the lower 48 . I love riding a 4 wheeler and camping out when possible .
...................Don't know about drugs but I doubt there is any place in the country where they don't exist . They've just become part of the culture it seems and I don't know what we can do about the problem . , thanks , for the help , fordy

My thoughts on the drug thing....there are drugs everywhere, and meth labs so highly portable that one may be parked across the street from your house and you'll never know it.

I can tell you that we've been reading the paper religiously since early July and haven't seen any references to meth or drugs that we can recall- seems like most of the legal notices have to do with alcohol. The people we met there were SUPER friendly. Folks is folks out there.

If you've never visited, the citydata forum at www.city-data/forum has a general New Mexico link as well as an Albuquerque link. I don't think you have to be registered to read, just to post.

Moriarity is about as different, climate and vegetation wise from Tennessee as you can get!

Yep, it is in an area of meth labs and old hippies.

And as to dryness, I grew up with it. What is to handle? Less mildew to contend with, and overall much cleaner except for dust.

Expect not to garden, or to both really build up the soil with compost and to irrigate.

The micro climate around M. is one where the heavy snows will hit.

Generally speaking, I would much rather be in the Pecos Valley or the four corners region than I would Moriarity. Or the Raton mesa, whether in Co or NM.

Hey--if you want to do the jeep roads, move to Farmington/Aztec/Bloomfield area and do the San Juans!
