Can you spot the copperhead??

This is a good thing to show to your kids for those who live in the same rural settings as these snakes. I didn't even see it at first. People tend to think that it is getting cold enough by the time the leaves fall that the snakes have gone into hibernation, but that isn't necessarily true.

You will see this, this fall, when leaves drop on the ground near the privacy fence, the storage house, hunting lease and the underbrush gets crowded with leaves and limbs. Be careful when you rake those fall leaves.

It too me a second but I found him! He does not appear to be on the small side either guaging from the surroundings. I've had a few close encounters like this myself, this is an excellent example of why we need to pay attention in the woods! Thanks for sharing!

Took me awhile to find him. Good thing I don't live in Copperhead country. Buzzworms are easier to find.

there is some state land 4 miles from me that is posted so people can not go on the land between April and October to disturbe or get bit the rattle snakes, the state forgot to tell the snakes that they weren't supposed to be out after October because my son and I ran into 2 yesterday.

I had to first go look up a picture of a copperhead to find it. Glad I don't live where ya'lls do!!!!!!!!!!!!! About a month back it seemed like we were running across snakes almost every day. I guess they are trying to find warm spots and a place to winter over this time of year. Lots of little ones in particular. There's another thing I love about winter!

Adron,
A week ago Sat. we had a hay ride for the youth from church. Very cool day as my boys and I were setting things up for camp fire he drove across the yard our 13yo was walking to help unload the firewood, looked down and yelled Dad look at this, it was in the tire track flattened out. First time in 30 years we have found one so close to house.

OMGosh, spotted'er right away. Thanks, and now I know my eyes are still in sync with my run away heart, my instinctive reflex from seeing a snake.
Great picture! Thanks for posting! Gonn'a bring GK's to have a look, see and learn to beware!
Thanks Adron......and also glad YOU seen it first!

So I got my three children in to see if they could find it. Good lesson.

DD14 and DS6 got it straight away, but DS9 had to be shown.

Thanks for that!
Rose
So what you're saying is, unless you have one of the kids with you, then you'll never see the snake coming?

Don't worry, copperhead bites ain't often fatal.

A couple of Falls ago, I was tromping off a beaten path in a lot of fallen leaves whenever I heard a noise. I looked down in from of me to see a tail slither off under the leaves. It was so big and pointed, I wasn't sure it was a snake because it happened so fast, but it had to have been one. It looked just like the leaves and I never would have seen it if it hadn't ran away. I've always wondered just how close I came to stepping on it before I saw it. Having grown up in snake country, I can still hear my mom's voice saying "watch for snakes" I spotted the one in the picture simply because I knew one had to be there, otherwise, I would never have seen it.

Me too. And I know what they look like, but that one was very well hidden.
