Moles IN the house?

We moved in two weeks ago, the other night we were sitting at the dining room table and seen something scurry along the cupboard, DH thought it was a mouse, I didn't see a tail and thought it was a mole (FIL had one in his garage that scared me to death lol) We set a trap and sure enough a couple days later caught it and it was a mole. Fast forward to yesterday afternoon, hear a rattle rattle in the cupboard underneath the sink, think oh great a mouse (it's that time of year yes?) set another trap, same location just a new mole.

Is this normal? I thought they stayed OUTside and UNDERground. We are on a crawl if that means anything, but is it common for them to come Inside the house like this? And how the heck do we discourage them? We've went underneath the sink and don't see any direct holes or openings where they may be coming in from and they are seeming to follow the same "trail" Are they like ants and have a scent trail or something that they follow?

Sorry if I sound stupid, but I've never dealt with these boogers before, and they SCARE me LOL. (and these are moles NOT voles (I did google searches o the pictures of the two and it is surely moles that we're getting)

Are you positive they are moles and not shrews? Shrews are a bit smaller than mice, dark brown, have no outward ears and short little tails. I've had them here in my house, too. Mouse traps worked just fine with them, baited with peanut butter.

Seems really odd they would be moles.

these were a bit larger (longer) than your average mouse, no tail, funky paws and no tails. had a grey almost black looking velvety type fur/coat. I couldn't say one way or the other (I'll be the first to admit i"m uneducated in the difference between the two, just know that these are NOT mice lol) but from the pics that I googled on shrews they don't look like one but I'm guessing that there is probably different types of them?

PS: Maybe the farmer's wife cut off the tail with a carving knife. Did he run and was he bumping into things like he was blind?

Well I fished a dead mole out of the sump pit in my crawl space the other day, so I guess they do find their way inside occasionally.

"funky paws"? If you mean large long toe nails on the front paws then it probably was a mole. Most mice and shrews will run right next to the wall.

That *does* sound like a mole! The velvety coat kinda gives it away. And they can be big! Seems I remember reading about them somewhere that said the males go on a search for females in the fall. They don't see very well, so you have all these blind, hormone-driven creatures wandering around... yeesh.
