Smokey Fireplace

We have a stone fireplace in our home - was already here when we bought the house a few months ago. My DH cleaned the chimney before we attempted to use it a few days ago, but when he started a fire in it, the house filled up with smoke. He looked this morning and he can see daylight in the fireplace, itself, all the way up the chimney to the top, so we know there is nothing blocking the chimney. However, there is no insert or piping inside the chimney and our neighbor said there should be. We have never used a fireplace before and my grandpa always had a woodstove so we are pretty lost with what to do. Does anybody have any ideas? We really want to heat with the fireplace and have plenty of wood (5 cords) just for that purpose.

Our son had the same problem with the fireplace in his house. He finally gave up and bought a wood stove insert for the fireplace and now happily burns wood with no draft/smoke problems.
