cleaning the glass on the woodstove door...

I can pretty much just wipe it with a damp cloth, but anything safe to use to clean heavy residue? I know HD/Lowes sells a special cleaner, but would rather not have to buy it. can't help it...I like the glass clean to REALLY view the fire. and...I'll confess that I'm a clean freak. thanks!

I have used oven cleaner on the really tough spots before. Seems to work good for me

On the real bad spots, we use a single-edge razor blade scraper. The "easy spots" can be cleaned with a damp rag dipped in woodash.

We also use a cleaner that has silicone in it. The silicone coats the inside of the glass. This "treatment" keeps the glass cleaner longer. I can't remember the brand name right now.

Dampen a piece of newspaper and dip into some of the soot itself and rub onto the glass. It should clean it up for you !!

Burn hot fires and you wont need to clean the glass.

If your getting black on the glass, your getting black in the flue. On the flue it's called creosote.

thanks! first I'll try the ash cleaning. don't worry...we burn hot fires. I make sure it's in the clean burn range at all times. I think it gets a bit sooty when the fire dies out during the night. and no....nobody is getting me out of that bed to add wood to keep it going. lol that is the only time the furnace will be on (during winter. right now with nights in the 30's it's been enough without the furnace)

hub says he burns his sooty stuff off (his woodstove in the garage), but then again.....his garage bathroom isn't my idea of perfect clean either...so trust me, neither is that glass on his stove.

WOW...the ash worked GREAT! just a little dab on a damp rag...hardly much rubbing...it looks like new. nice to know all the products mentioned if I get a tough spot...thanks again everyone!! it's a little silly I guess, but I just like it very clean to start the day.

There is a special cleaner for the glass but I don't have any right now to give the name. I also have used the cleaner for ceramic stove tops which works good.

Put some ash from the fire onto a moist rag of ball of newspaper and rub the glass. Finish off with a clean cloth.
OR
Soak some paper towels with brown vinegar. Spread the paper on the glass, leave for about 15 minutes, then wipe the doors. This will also work on oven doors.
