LDS Food Storage Price Drops

Just a note I checked the prices on food storage items through the LDS Cannery and the price of powdered milk is down 37% and the cost of dehydrated Carrots is down 29%. Several other items are down a fraction, but most items are up. Hard Red wheat is up 31%. Beans are up about 15%, except for black beans which are down about 10%. Dehydrated Refried beans are down about 13%.

These prices are current price in comparison to the Spring 08 price list.

Ouch on the wheat, but not unexpected. Still a bargain. Glad to hear it about the milk!

Sure wish they'd bring the pudding mix back.

I don't think I've ever seen the church put their price lists online. Not officially anyway. It's sent to the canneries.

Last time we did an inventory, I had 22 cans of it! Don't know how that happened exactly. I guess we will count it as a dairy serving.....

don't you get the same price rate through the LDS catalog? If you can't go to the cannery, order through the LDS catalog. You can't get it in bulk that way, it comes already packed in the #10 cans which will make the price a bit higher.

http://www.ldscatalog.com/webapp/wcs...0151&langId=-1

In the middle section of the page under Family and Home Storage

33# of wheat is $30? Or $35. I forgot after I closed the link. That's the price with the cans and the postage.

Alan, we get the pudding mix from Walton Feed - it is exactly the same as the LDS buy. I compared.

They do actually post the prices online, however, to actually get most products other than a few basics, you'll need a member to go with you or for you to pick them up.

Anyone can access this page, as it's a link on www.lds.org. http://www.providentliving.org/pfw/m...JUL_08_pdf.pdf

The only time that I have been aloud to purchase is while working at the canneries or other welfare assignments. We completed the needed order. Then you are able to work on items for your individual purchase.
Now they pass around a signup sheet before the assignment and that is added to the order. You can take your order home with you that day, when done.
These items are primarily for those in need.
They aren't just for LDS members. Get in touch with a local Ward or Branch in your area. I'm sure that they would be happy to have anyone come and help. I'm sure that you can be contacted the next time that there is an assignment.
If you know an LDS member, tell them that you would like to be a part of their next welfare assingment. And ask to be contacted.
We have several different kinds of work that is assigned to us.
I've made pasta. Canned many different kinds of fruits and vegatables.
A stake that I lived in once was assigned to care for a 600 cow/calf pair operation that the LDS church has. At that time we were able to purchase calves, put them in the lot and take them to finish.
Many times we have made emergency hygene packs to be sent to areas of distress around the world. As I remember one time we assembled and packaged for shippment, over 6000 in one night. Just after Katrina.
Take your older children. It will effect them positively.

Yes, that's how we buy it now (if ever the current truck pool order would come in!) but it's a lot more expensive to be sure.

I see you are in Utah, things are different out here in the real world
You can call the local Cannery and make an appointment now rather than having an assigned ward day, they have cannery workers that are there certain hours and they will help you can your items. This is new as of this year. No welfare or farm assignments out here either.
There was a limit of 4 cases for any 1 item last time we went.

"This is new as of this year"

NOPE - been this way as far as I have been a member - 15 years +/-.

All we have to do is make an appointment to go individually OR we can have the ward pack it for us when they go for a ward function. Either way the price is the same and the labor is the same. If we go by ourselves and they need some help at the cannery - of course we help.

The online order catalog listed above -- Can anyone order from there? The closest cannery we have is almost 5 hours away.

Your nearest one is in Gallatin/Hendersonville - just north of Nashville - off 31W? and Shackelford/Shackel Island? road. I can give directions easier than I can give an address.

LDS cannery confusion

I know how easy it is to get confused about the LDS canneries. I spent a lot of time wondering and have mis-informed people myself. Often information between canneries is different since different people run them and will be more strict in different areas. PM me for more information there. But here is what I have learned.

The LDS church discourages their memebers from going on any kind of govt relief. There has been established a way to provide for their poor and needy. There are canneries - where volunteers can food supplies for the needy. This is everything from vegetables, to stew, to jello, to peanutbutter to tuna. Bishop's Storehouses -are where the products canned at the canneries are distributed to the needy. Canneries are few in number, except in the West, but Bishop's Storehouses are in many more locations. In the Storehouses often, but not always is a dry pack canning facility for use by members to put basic food storage items into cans or mylar bags or to buy in bulk. When the LDS cannery is mentioned on this forum, it is this dry-pack canning facility most often meant. Which technically isn't a CANNERY.

The reason a member has to come with a non-member is due to the tax laws in the country NOT due to church restrictions. The LDS church literally spends millions a year feeding/clothing/innoculating, and in general helping people across the world. They are not ones to refuse to allow people to buy food if it is available. Again, PM me.
