I don't know specifically about life alert but you might consider the manner in which the alarm process works before actually committing to a medical alarm. Some systems have alarms that, when activated, go through a call center where an operator calls back and tries to determine if an emergency is actually occurring. They then will place a call to 911 who then dispatches police/fire/EMS.
Another option, one I actually feel is preferable, is where the medical alarm is directly tied in to dispatch. In our county as soon as a medical alarm hits dispatch they page out EMS & SO. I believe that you get quicker turn-around this way and if you're unconscious or unable to get to a phone/near the monitor you have EMS on the way immediately as opposed to having to wait for a call back, then a determination of the problem, then the decision to call your local SO/911. Keeping in mind that irreversible brain damage can occur w/in 4 minutes of oxygen deprivation, seconds truly do count.
