My mom pays around $25/mo for monitoring for a similar service.

We were paying around $35/month CAD when my wife needed the service. Great peace of mind!

Here in WV we got it for MIL while she lived. It cost in the neighborhood of $200 for the equipment and set up. Then $59.95 per month. They deducted it from her checking account when she refused to let us kids pay for it. It was a God Send! At least 3 times she got a pan on fire in the kitchen and was alerted. She had forgotten she put food on to cook! And we all felt so relieved to know she was "not alone" if she fell or had a medical problem. She wore the button on a string around her neck. I think it even consoled her. Had we divided the cost among children it was well worth it. She is gone now and we are glad we talked her into getting the system. They told her even if she heard a noise in the night or someone strange was at her door to push the button. Jklady

We had one added to the existing alarm system for my Mother. Mounted an external antenna so she could transmit from anywhere in her gardens. She was not amused when I had it put in. Less than a year later she thanked me for it. No additional montly fee above the existing alarm monitoring.

I don't know specifically about life alert but you might consider the manner in which the alarm process works before actually committing to a medical alarm. Some systems have alarms that, when activated, go through a call center where an operator calls back and tries to determine if an emergency is actually occurring. They then will place a call to 911 who then dispatches police/fire/EMS.

Another option, one I actually feel is preferable, is where the medical alarm is directly tied in to dispatch. In our county as soon as a medical alarm hits dispatch they page out EMS & SO. I believe that you get quicker turn-around this way and if you're unconscious or unable to get to a phone/near the monitor you have EMS on the way immediately as opposed to having to wait for a call back, then a determination of the problem, then the decision to call your local SO/911. Keeping in mind that irreversible brain damage can occur w/in 4 minutes of oxygen deprivation, seconds truly do count.
