Wisconsin Property taxes

Talked to my mom yesterday and the taxes on our farm went from $3200 to over $6000. This is with zero improvements on the place. If anything it gets a little more run down every year. Have any of you from the dairy state seen increases like this?

We had 235 acres and the taxes were over 3000 in 91.
Haven't seen tax hikes like that in our area although my BIL dads place had his hiked because he wasn't farming it anymore and got stuck with the recreational tax.

Probably just re-assesed. I have 3 properties in Fond du Lac county and city. One place had a huge rise a few years ago due to a re-assessment and a big, big increase in taxes for the local school. Over the past 6 years most of my Wisconsin property taxes have at least doubled and one has tripled with no improvements.

Last year, my taxes were just under $5K for 17 acres, but this year, even after adding 7 acres, they totaled a little over $2,200. In Georgia, you can place your farm in an agricultural covenant which greatly reduces the taxes, and that was on my "to-do" list last Winter. It took some effort, but it really paid off. If you sell the land before the 10 year covenant expires, signficant penalties apply.

Wis. property tax bills don't come out until Dec. Sometimes people get confused when they get a notice of reassessment. They take that value times last year's mill rate and get a big number. Often times with reassessments the mill rate goes down if the total assessed values go up. Of course depending seldom do Wis. RE taxes go down.

Not in WI, but NY state, the taxes on my dad's place just went up from $2000 to $6000 to fund a new local school at the other end of the county! ldc

I bet it's the river frontage...waterfront property is like gold in WI and they tax the heck out of it. Pretty soon only the rich & famous will be able to afford any waterfront property. Where abouts are you in WI....I was born & raised in the Milw area. I was lucky that my parents always owned lake property growing up...before it got so popular! My DH's mom owns on Big Cedar near West Bend and is going to have to sell if the taxes go any higher.

riverfrontage will certainly up the taxes lately, and it's quite possible (considering the amount of the increase) that someone is building a development near you. Might be a couple miles down the road...but that's close enough to increase taxes a LOT. Small subdivisions are popping up all over the place near the river.

taxes on my rural 80 acres in SW Wi went from $400 to nearly $4000 in 10 years. Property taxes are out of control here. People are going to have to start selling as they can no longer afford to pay the crazy high taxes.....

And I thought NYS was bad. I'm sure feeling better about living here right now! But it will probably be my turn next year . . .

Thats why we moved out of WI a year and half ago- to AR> We went from 3500 for a 2/1 on a half acre, to 17 acres with a 4 or 5 /1 outbuildings a huge shop, etc. Our property taxes last year were in the 50 dollar range.
