Does anyone still use root cellers? Aren't there better ways to store vege's ? Seems like critters would be a huge problem.

Mine's under the house, and it's lined on the bottom with hardware cloth so nothing can tunnel into it. Walls are brick. It's perfect for things that like cool and damp.

better ways today, maybe. but if the power is interupted or gone all together... the old ways would come into play. and critters might be a problem but these things worked for thousands of years.

Big Root Cellars - I have seen a big root cellar that literally you could take a horse & wagon through. Has anyone worked with anything of this size?

Wish I had a root/storage cellar. Grew up with one & they're the greatest.

My house gets mighty hot during the summer with no air conditioning. I know it's not good for my canned goods.

Having another way to store produce from my garden over the winter other than canning or freezing - Nothing could be better!

Another thing on my 'dream on' list....

I built a small root cellar (4x6) in the basement a few years back. Produce stays pretty well if you store it right. Beats having to can or freeze all the big stuff like winter squash and taters.
