Free firewood

I posted this on CF and didn't have any luck finding anyone in this part of the country who wanted a large (I mean really, really large) oak tree that is already seasoned for firewood. I can't believe that people will "take it" if we cut and split it for them and some even want us to deliver it. I'll have a big bomb fire first! If anyone here lives anywhere in middle TN and would like the wood (I don't care what you do with it, burn it, sell it, whatever) PM me. Someone suggested that if I put a price on it that someone would probably take it since it was worth something. If you come bring your chain saw and trailer to haul it on and I'll even fix you lunch!

If it is still standing

It will be far from seasoned.Even if it is down and in log lengths I seriously doubt it will be seasoned.Oak takes forever and a day to dry.
So you are wanting someone to come cut the tree down and haul it away?Or is it already down and just needs bucked to length?

People want money to take a tree down and haul it away. It isn't enough to just give it away. I had to pay $300 to have someone take a locust tree down in my front yard in a residential area. They take the wood too and sell that. These are considered professional people and insured if the tree should fall wrong. They also cleaned up everything, limbs, brush.

The oak tree has been dead for a couple of years. We had the biggest one pushed over with a bull dozer when we were having a pond dug. It seems to be dry and seasoned. but I could be wrong as I am just going by the way it looks. There are some smaller oaks that were dead and DH cut them down this past spring. We just hate to see the wood go to waste if anyone can keep warm with it this winter. There is probably a tractor trailer load of wood total.

Hope this answers any questions ya'll have. If I can answer anything else just PM me and I'll try and give you an answer.

Up where we live no one ever gives away firewood, except maybe to family and friends, but you never see it advertised. Unless someone wants a tree cut down and hauled away. But down near the Cities people are forever offering trees on CL. If I happened to be down there with the truck and saw some cut and split firewood which someone wanted to get rid of I'd probably take as much as I could haul, but it isn't worth it to drive down just to pick up firewood to haul back. It would cost me more in fuel than the wood is worth- I can buy it already cut locally for less $$$.

The problem is, I'm not going on to some city person's property with a chainsaw to drop a tree- the liability alone is a big factor. But also, it's a lot of work. Then trying to cut/split the wood when it is still green is even more work. It is heavy to handle and load even if it is dry, and wet it is much worse. By the time you get all that done they want you to clean up the brush and limbs- heck, by then I'd be worn out, and still facing the prospect of a long drive home and all the wood to unload.

I agree that it is a shame to see a tree go to waste. But a lot of the value in firewood is in the labor, and I think a lot of property owners underestimate that in thinking their wood is worth a lot of $$$.

Put an add in your local newspaper in the "just for free" ads. It shouldn't cost you anything and I imagine you will get someone out there pretty fast.

Maybe mention it to a church or two in the area. We have a widow in the area with several young children. Some of the men from her church get together and make a day of cutting firewood for the her family. For the past few years they have been able to get enough wood done up to heat her home and they have fun and fellowship while they are working. Perhaps there is a widow, widower, or some elderly in the area where folks would like to pitch in like this to help?

It would seem a shame to see good oak go to waste when it could heat a home this winter.

Thanks everyone, found a couple of takers for at the wood. Didn't expect anyone to clean up the limbs etc. just wanted to be nice and help someone keep warm this winter. The tree is already on the ground and there is a drive right next to it.

You're a little too far away or I'd claim it. There's plenty of free wood around me as few burn wood. If they were good oak logs you should have contacted a sawmill, they would have picked them up or had someone pick them up for saw logs.
