Himmicane Ike

At present all the models for Ike have Ike scoring a direct hit as a strong cat 3 or cat 4 Himmicane on the Texas cost about halfway between Brownsville and Houston. If one extends a line about 250 miles directly inland towards 30N, 99W you find Kerrville, TX directly in the cross hairs.

Guess where I live - In Center Point, TX about 9 miles SE of Kerrville. The good part is we need the rain, the bad part is we don't need the wind. Its time to start battening down the hatches now if you live around here. I have some loose tin on the sheep and chicken barns that need taking care of and I am glad I don't have to much hay on hand.

I hope Ike does not hit ya. We just went through Gustav . So I guess it's ya'll's turn. Naaa just joking. He really could end up anywhere in the gulf, so I better shut up for now. He might decide he wants to come and visit the battered and wet state of Louisiana just to see if he can out do his brother Gustav. Hang tight and get everything buttoned down. Oh and also I can tell you this. In about 2 days everyone is going to go gas crazy and buy up all the gas cans in walmart , and then all the gas stations will be empty.
That's what happened here , even in the middle of the state. So hope ya are prepared.

I just finished checking computer models and saw the adjustment further south.....we were in the crosshairs earlier today (Galveston). The thing is, the models change several times a day and we won't have a definitive landfall point for another day or two. It's nerve-wracking watching the tracks change....we're in the track, we're out of the track. AARRGGH!

Now, I wish no harm on any other human being, but maybe we can collectively 'think' it into Mexico....to the more uninhabited regions where it would do minimal harm.

Hoping. For all our sakes.

I don't really care where it goes as long as you all and I are OK, but we sure do want the rain. It can park itself over my house for a couple of days - without the wind of course.

Current tracks look like it has Corpus Christi in the sights. That brings Galveston and then in to us on the right upper quadrant which is the worst part of the storm.

Yep, just what we (dont) need. Fixing to start packing up down here. Notice my location? Sure hope that thing goes to Mexico. This is NOT the way I wanted to spend my weekend.

Actually now heading south of Corpus, but that just puts Corpus on the right front quadrant of the storm which is the worst side to be on.

I want some of the rain regardless of where it goes.

I'm still not ready to let down my guard, even though it appears Ike may land farther south. He's still far enough away to be unpredictable, but definitely time for Ninny and others down that way to start getting ready.

One good thing I see is that Atlantic activity seems to be quieting down. Nothing coming off of Africa and Atlantic waters are beginning to cool a bit. Hopefully, this will be the last one for this season.

Man, your just full of good news. Don't you have something down on the goat forum that you need to talk about? Really know how to make a person feel good.

You want some rain, just bring your bucket on down, you can have all that you can haul off.

what do you all do specific to huricanes as opposed to other natual disasters?

Just wondering. Maybe this question should have been in the preparednedd thread.

Lots more praying...

Just have all important stuff'; papers, personal stuff, pictures in a place where it's easy to get to them to pack when you're ready to leave. Try to stock up on necessities that may not be available if the storm comes thru. With most other natural disasters, i.e. tornadoes, earthquakes, it hits you all of a sudden. With a hurricane the tension has time to build up because you can sit and watch it coming at you and know that there's not a lot you can do.
It's not something you want to do, take my word for it.

Prepare your dwelling as best as possible; i.e. cover windows/doors with boards or plywood, secure anything that can go airborne, pack the car with your most valuable/irreplaceble possessions, wait for the evacuation order, then get on the highway with a million other people that are trying to get out of harm's way and drive 5 mph for 24 hours to reach a shelter.

Or, you can take your chances, stay home and get drunk. I'm not that brave and I don't drink.

Not gonna happen to this fella. Ain't getting caught in another one of those evacuations. Went thru one some years back, went 30 miles in about 8 hrs. Got my important stuff packed, gonna hit the road bright and early in the morning regardless of the weather forecast. I was going to San Antonio for the weekend anyway, have to go see my son, he's celebrating his 34th birthday. Really didn't want to leave under these circumstances though.

Well, if the good Lord is willing and the creek don't rise (wind don't blow) I'll have a place to come back to after the weekend. If not, oh well, will have to make do. I was looking to buy a place up around S.A. anyway, might be the time to do some serious looking.

Stay safe, Ninny and best wishes to you. I don't plan on getting stuck in other evacuation nightmare either. I'll make my own plans and take the back roads where I need to go. I've lived here all my life, been through enough storms and close calls that I know best how to stay out of harm's way.

Dana, we're still mostly prepped from Gustav, too. Have to re-cover a couple windows because I can't stand living in a cave, and gather some pictures and papers, but otherwise, we're ready to go. It's this relentless waiting and watching that wears me down to a frazzle.

Safe wishes to all.

My friend is a popular forecaster on the Weather Channel. Truth is, they have no idea where this hurricane is going to go. If you look at their past predictions/models and the actual path it has taken- they've been wrong every time. Sorry, Nick, if you happen to stumble upon this post!
