Fence Chargers

Our Lowes has a solar fence charger for $168. Has anyone had experience with them? I want to fence off about half an acre to keep our dachsunds home! ,how close can the two wires be apart or do you need two wires? It will have to be close to the ground. Our electri is always going off in storms is the reason for thinking solar. Would I be wise to just use the much cheaper(less than $40) electric charger?

We use a solar collector to charge several lines around an orchard. It helps some with keeping deer out. We used to run several lines inside a sturdy, almost solid wood fence to keep goats in, too. It may be ready for a repair or a second new battery, but that's over almost 20 years. I'm not sure this is a plan for dachshunds, though. Once they figure out they can jump through it, or get used to dealing with a single shock, they're gone. We run 12-volt and that would be dangerously high for little guys. Sue

Pharmak makes a good solar charger. I have never used one, but we sell them and have only heard good things about them.

I use electric fencing to keep in my large breed dogs. I've not had one jump it "Yet". And do wonder why sometimes!! I did have them figure out how to go under it. Solved that by adding a lower strand. And nobody has escaped since then. A lot will depend on the dogs and how bad they want out. The last dog I added to the yard, I made sure she got zapped and knew what the fence was before I left her unattended. They have to know what it will do to them or it won't keep them in. I let her find it on her own and did not bait her into finding it. But that is an option. For that small of a dog. I would say use 2 strands. One low enough they have to hit there nose on it to get under, or at no higher than the top of their heads. Well maybe 3. The smaller the dog the closer the wires need to be to keep them from going through them. But that depends on the dogs on how much they respect the fence. And how bad they want out. All wires don't have to be hot. Just he main once they are subject to hit!!!

More importantly how are you going to convince the eagles that those dachsunds aren't simply another variety of tasty rabbit?
