Passive ceiling vent?

Our house had/had an open vent from the dining room to one of the upstairs bedrooms. The grate on the top is still there, but at some time the bottom grate was removed and lost. Now that we have removed the false ceiling that was there, we would like to use this vent again. The problem is that I don't know where to start looking for a replacement. We could consider new or used-probably slightly prefer new if anyone still makes such a thing. The current one is about 10.5" X 14.5", so the new one would have to be at least that big (and not bigger than 14.5" as that's the distance between the joists in that area). Maybe one just needs to find appropriate sized vent cover and screw it onto an open box of plywood? If anyone knows where to get one of these please let me know.

I've seen grate covers advertised, real pretty ones, in Homebuilding Today magazine. I think you could also go to a metal worker.

Most good hardware stores are a good place to look some of the larger big box stores can have them like Home Depot. Try a place that sells hardware and lumberer building materials.

www.homedecorliving.com has reproduction antique registers. A 14x 10 is $66.00 and looks like cast iron or similar type metal. I've also seen these in antique restoration catalogs, they tend to be pricey, but so are most specialty items. Just google register or heating register.

OK thanks so much. I haven't check Menard's or Home Depot yet, but I will (I just assumed they wouldn't have one!).

That one in the link is pretty much exactly what we're looking for! If I can't find one locally I will definitely be ordering it.

I did try to google my request but couldn't seem to find the right words!

These companies have them: http://www.shop4classics.com/ventcovers.asp

Baseboard units in case others might be in need of them: http://www.missionmetalworks.com/baseboardregister.aspx

A web search for antique floor register yields many other sites.

When you go in and look don't just look ask someone. They may have them in a place that you would not expect. If there is a good ACE Hardware store around they might have them or will order them for you Home Depot has a order desk also.
