A thief has hit my garden!!!
I am SO MAD, all my sweet corn that was ready, I was going to pick it, but it's ALL GONE!! NO EARS, whatever took it just riped it off and took it ALL.
What took it? most of the corn looks normal, but a few plants are bent over about where the ears are. I can't see any tracks since it rained last night.
THE THIEF'S TOOK IT ALL, just the immature ears are present, but all the ripe ears are GONE, GONE I SAY!!
I AM SO BUMMED, I was going to have sweet corn tonight, time to get revenge.
Can Coons do this, or is this a deer problem?

The deer got my watermelons last night, they ate every one that was ready.
What has me most aggrivated is the dogs will kill every rabbit around here, chase the cats, bark at every opossum, but when the deer are eating hundreds of dollars worth of watermelon they are nowhere to be found.
I am seriously considering heading out with my SKS tonight and getting my pound of flesh.

Well, aren't you the guerilla gardening proponent from this post two weeks ago? http://homesteadingtoday.com/showthr...96#post3190296
in which you said "Guerrilla gardening, hiking or just taking off days and live in the woods, tresspassing can be fun.
You just got to know what to avoid, like stay away from buildings and avoid hunting seasons and holidays. You leave the land as you found it, always go by foot or bicycle. Slip off into the wilderness, just as our Natives did in hundred of years in the past.
It's no big deal, just show respect and quietness."
So, I guess you been guerilla gardened. but, as you said."Its no big deal..."

Poor soul, don't even know what guerilla gardening is, typical.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Guerrilla_gardening
It has nothing to do with stealing produce out of ones garden. lol.
Oh, BTW that corn is not ready yet either, but when it does I'll be extra snappy to get it.

My bet would be raccoon(s). Those little buggers will wait, until I swear they can hear you say you are going to pick corn *tomorrow*. Then, they get together with all their other furry little raccoon friends and have a feeding frenzy in the corn patch. We had this happen last year, and our neighbor had an entire greenhouse of corn (open-ended greenhouse) wiped out in one night by raccoons.
Sorry about your corn! We didn't even plant any this year because we knew we wouldn't have a fence up this year....wasn't worht our time or the wasted garden space to feed the raccoons. Next year, we'll have corn again because we'll have fence (electric included!) up around the garden.

Can chicken fencing keep these guys out?
What is the best method to deal with this problem?

If coons did it, you will have partially eaten ears on the ground and hanging on the stalks. If the whole thing, shucks, cob, everything is gone, I would wonder about 2-legged theives.........

That was done by coons. They bend some of the stalks down to reach the ears.
I've had that happen before with the whole patch, too.

Chicken fence is a jungle gym for coons. A .22 works well.

Very true. Alot of times the coons leave stripped ears as evidence of their ill-gotten booty
I still lay money on coons though....

I had it happen with raccoons too -
When we lived in Sioux City, IA, I had a beautiful garden on the edge of town. In one night, those silly coons took 95% of my sweet corn - same thing, ears bent down, stripped and gone. And, it was just ripe - I was going to pick it and freeze it.

Was it dine-in or drive-thru? Dine-in, critters. Drive-thru, people!
So sorry for your loss!

Yep. Ate all mine too. Stalks looked like they'd been laid down on. Husks all over. Some eaten while on the stalks. I guess they don't have the appetite to take down huge cornfields!
