how to paint rusty sheet metal

I'm building a shed off of my barn and have salvaged some used sheet metal for the roof. Some of it is really rusty, but is solid. I want to paint it, but don't know how to clean it, before I paint, so that the paint will actually stick. Does anyone know of a product that will work ??

Used to be able to buy aluminum paint for such as that. Don't know if it is still available.

There is a paint. I was told to use Rustolium (not sure of spelling) Usually comes in spray cans, but can be bought by the gallon. Some paint stores carry it, other are special order in my area.

Hey.

Rustoleum will work. It has fish oil in it and the smell lingers for a long time. Sometimes the panel rust will conceal little pinholes that will leak a wee bit.

http://www.ospho.com/

This will do the best job of preparing it for paint

Thanks for the suggestions guys. I knew about the paint, but didn't know how to treat the metal before putting on the primer and paint...........I'm checking out the OSPHO, and I allready have some TSP, so I should be in business............

There is another product I have used in the past that works very well, and of course I can't remember the name!

It was a sticky translucent blue paint stuff for sheet metal priming. The building I used it in 20+ yrs ago still retains a good red paint job on the metal roof. This stuff came in a gallon can and was a bit expensive way back when.

I don't know the OSPHO product, it could be the same or similar.

Yep, definitely treat it with Ospho first. The Ospho reacts chemically with the rust and turns it into a primer. Put another coat of a good quality metal primer on it, then paint it with elastomeric paint.
