Tractor problem Help

I have a 5000 Ford diesel this morning while moving some hay I noticed oil leaking from the bottom of the tractor. It is coming from a small hole about middle of the tractor , a short distance from the engine , It is motor oil not hyd and the who;e is build there it has a carter key sticking out and it bent two way Does this pin hold something on the inside of the tractor ? Is it a main bearing leaking ? It looks like a lot of oil but when you check the engine it doesn.t loose a lot on the dip stick , Shut it down as soon as I saw the oil. Any ideas ??? Thanks

I would guess the oil is coming from a main seal leak.

Why don't you ask the experts on this forum.

Cotter key is just there to keep the hole clear, simple effective engineering. Hole you describe is most likely at the bottom of the bell housing. Oil from this hole would have to be motor oil from rear seal of trans fluid from frt. seal.

Not a critical situation, as long as your keep a close watch on how much you are loosing.

Like was stated before - the hole and the cotter pin is SUPPOSED to be there. The pin keeps the hole cleared of any 'muck' that might develop. Keep a watch on it and go from there.

As others said its the engine rear main seal leaking. When it starts marking its terrritory where its very noticable, then time to fix it and while you have things separated check the clutch.

Now if you only use the tractor couple times a year, I suppose you can just keep couple spare cases oil and top it off. I personally dont like playing those kind of games. If its significantly leaking oil, fix it and you wont have to keep thinking about it. Otherwise you are going to forget sometime and destroy the engine. Price a diesel rebuild and it will seem real bargain to replace the seal.

The hole lets the oil drip out; if it could not, the oil would build up & coat the clutch, and then you would have serious clutch issues as well. So, do not seal the hole.

My 960 is doing the same thing. It will be the rear main seal.
