Simple math can easily be done.
How many laps do you need to run or swim to achieve the distance.
Have them take the times and calculate the average speed of a runner.
Advanced engineering -
How much force does it take foe a polevaulter to go over the bar? (not sure I could even do that)
Could have them research how some events came to be. (history of the event and culture of it's origins)
