Help with a bird id Please

The past two days there have been these two birds on our pond. They make a heck of a yell when they are disturbed, and very flighty. They seem to be either brown or grey with a orange yellow body. They sort of look like a heron when they fly and body size of a wood duck. The nose is pointy not blunt. We've searched baby herons and they aren't it. Dh and I have a bet. HE insists they are baby herons, but I don't think so. For one they seem to be a mature bird, and one is prettier then the other so I think they are a mated pair. Plusss their legs are not long and no long neck. I'm trying to get close enough to get a picture, but they are pretty well hid down there. I think they might even have a nest, because when you get close to wherever they are one takes off making a real racket. Its very loud and sounds like peetooo peetoo maybe lolololol. Any way if you have any ideas that would be great. I've never seen or heard anything like it before and would love to know what it is . You guys have helped in the past and I look forward to any replies. THANKS and take care

A picture would help immensely. Meanwhile, you might look at this website to see if any look familiar. http://www.enature.com/fieldguides/i...p?curGroupID=1
