Address Numbers on Raw Land?

DW and I just bought "the farm." It's never had an address (it has a legal description and parcel letter, but no address). Totally vacant - no buildings.

How do we get an address? Is that a Post Office thing? A county thing? Township?

Thanks.

I think you need a house to get a postal address.

It depends on if your area has a universal addressing system. My county has been doing this for a number of years, and so far, most of the county doesn't not have their new address yet.
The post office will know IF you have that system, and if so, I think there is a number assigned every 50 feet of roadway, so it doesn't matter if there is a structure or not.

Depends on where you live and it can take a while. It took us 6 months dealing with the post office, the local building & planning office and the sheriff's office to get a mailing address. And to make it even more fun the local post office told me they could not deliver mail to an address if the local government had not give their royal permission for someone to live in the home on the property. At the time we were living in a camper on the property.

It will depend my location, but around here if it doesnt have a home it doesnt get an address, if it has living space then the health dept will inspect and certify the home and do the paperwork for an address.

Well I know that in my county when we we bought our property and before we could begin building we had to have the address assigned to us by the Sheriff/emergency coordinator. I was general contractor and no subcontractor or electric company or water service no-one would even begin giving an estimate without an address assigned. They all wanted the safety of emergency services being able to find the place if there was a mishap of any kind. And we bought open/tree pasture with out any buildings, only cattle and fences. After we got the address then Postal service was started.

Ours is also about the post office. You contact them about where you can put a mailbox they then tell you what your address is. Ours changed from a rural route two different numbers, then a zip code change, area code change not the PO's fault that time, and then a 911 street address change. We didn't have to burn much wood those years we just burned our business cards! vicki

We contacted someone in the county who dealt with the E-911 system, and they assigned us our address, just took them a couple days.

In my area it is the county that ultimately assigns the address number. My property has 545 feet of frontage and sets between 702 and 720. I asked if I could use 714 (7 doubled) and they queried where on the property I would build, I stated approximately in the middle of the frontage so they allowed my selection.

In my area one need not have a house to obtain an address. I have had mine for approximately 10 years without a house being on the property.

It helps propane deliverymen, etc. to have an address to go by.

I had to go to the sheriffs office to get mine, they used a GPS to give us an address it's something to do with 911,it took about two months ,but like everyone says depends on your area.

LOL it was similar to that around here. Over a 5 year (or so) period everything kept changing.

We had to get in touch with 911 and it took about 2 weeks but we had to have a address before they would deliver the mobile home.

That's what we had to do. If I remember correctly, we had to put up a mailbox and fill out a form that we got from the County Health Dept. The health dept./911 office wouldn't assign an address until they did a perc test to determine if we could have a septic tank installed. They mailed us a notice with the assigned address on it and then we took that to the Post Office.

I'm sure it varies from county to county, state to state. Best place to start is by calling your county courthouse.

Wow, not one of you said you didn't want an address. Most people here don't want one and so the county made this rule, that you had to get your septic approved by the county. When they saw where you lived, you were forced to accept their address. Most people just use Post Office Boxes.

Space Cowboy, in our county you can't get a building permit without an address. So, if we wanted a house, we had to have an address. Also, I HATE driving eight miles into town to get my mail because I HATE to go into town for any reason whatsoever.

I moved to this county because it didn't have county building permits.
