woodpeckers attacking my cabin

This past weekend, my wife and I twice heard some knocking noises...I went upstairs opened the window and threw up the sash, stuck my head out to see a woodpecker flying away...then I inspected the rest of the cabin, and see two more places where he's been busy. Anybody else have a similar problem? suggestions?

you may have bugs, OR they are drumming to attract a mate. Your house makes a good drum

Post a cat on guard? Or you could try using a few mylar balloons with owl eyes on them...it will scare them away.

They are probably after carpenter bee larva, thats what they were after on my house. I plugged all the bee holes with silicon and no more bees or peckers. Heres the varmint Eddie http://www.college.emory.edu/culpepe...woodpecker.jpg LOL when I first saw where they had pecked, I thought someone had shot my house with BUCKSHOT

This thread brought to mind a story that my uncle told on himself. Apparently, he had a woodpecker hanging around his house, and it was making a pest of itself, knocking, (and presumably drilling holes), on the house. After repeated attempts to scare the bird away, my uncle finally got fed up, and took his shotgun outside, lined up on the bird, and... promptly shot his chimney! The bird, of course, got clean away, and my uncle was left with a mangled chimney to repair. My uncle is a really great guy, and a very decent Christian man, (deacon in his church), but I have a feeling that there may have been a few swear words uttered after this little episode! Needless to say, I wouldn't recommend the shotgun method to PheasantPlucker, to solve the woodpecker problem! LOL!

We also had a woodpecker problem. We caulked all bee holes. Bought 2 plastic owls and attached them to each end of the cabin. Also a rubber snake on the side. That was last spring. No pecking so far. Thay are very destructive! Good Luck.

Those guys are HUGE! I was sitting on the front porch and heard feathers. I turned just in time to see one fly past. He landed in a nearby tree and when he drummed, it sounded like someone was hammering on a board without using nails.

Yea, they are big. My wife heard someone knocking on the door, but no one was there. A little later she heard it again, this time she saw him, the woodpecker was under the carport pecking carpenter bee holes. When I came home, before I talked to her, I saw the damage an thought someone had shot the house. Eddie

My sister had that problem for years with woodpeckers AND carpenter bees making holes in her log house. They ended up treating the outside with something to get rid of the bumblebees. Once the bees were gone, the woodpeckers stopped coming. Of course, the big cat that hung out on her porch helped too.

I'm sure a search online would turn up stuff to treat the logs with and I'll ask my sister what they used.

thanks all for the responses...I've saturated every log with Woodguard and then sprayed the entire cabin with a product called BeeGone. I'll try the owl decoys and perhaps a snake. Cat is out of the question cause we only are there on the weekends, and I'm sure as heck not gonna shoot a woodpecker...

Hey.

Once you take the appropriate action, change your id to "woodpeckerplucker".
