little trees everywhere!

We have the old black walnut field line which was common in this area. There have always been little ones coming up, especially in the former horse-pasture which we no longer use, but this year is startling. They are everywhere! I have 8 or 10 trying to grow under the fruit trees in my orchard, two in the rhubarb patch, a bunch on the pond dike, etc., etc. Other kinds of seedlings, like sugar maples & ashes seem to be springing up,too. We have the adult trees, just haven't had many scions. I have heard that the changing weather/climate is promoting vine growth, and I can attest to that! Are all these little trees an indicator, too? Could be that they just liked the conditions in your area. Wild flowers will do the same thing. Some years we don't see ANY, the next year the field is covered!

I'll have to check mine for "babies". I'd sure transplant a bunch to places I want them. I planted a 6" tall Black Walnut that I dug up from behind the house in town we used to own. I planted it 8' behind our outhouse on the farm. In the 5 years since, it has grown to 5" around and about 12' tall. It is a far cry from the tiny "twig" that was only about 1/8" in diameter when I planted it. It was even a "Summer Transplant" - the worst time of the year to do it and not be around to water it. It only got water when it rained and on every other weekend because we didn't live here yet....

i would remove the black walnut trees that are growing near your fruit trees or other plants you want to keep. the roots of the trees produce a substance that inhibits growth of vegetation near them. dont remember exactly what it is called, but you can google for the information.

otherwise, i love black walnuts. good nuts, good shade, good investment for future forestry harvesting.

I agree!! The only thing good about black walnut is the way it smells in the woodstove.

We've noticed the same here. I've been potting up the little guys and will plant them this fall. We've done that several times over the years and are beginning to get a good stand of hardwoods for nothing!

Ditto with seedlings of my trees this year. None of them black walnut sadly, but everything else is going crazy. Every kind of maple this area supports, pine, blue spruce, you name it. I just rip them right up. They are good looking ones too, better than the nursery for sure. Seems a shame.

I am cultivating Bald Cypress to put in the river marsh next year. But that's it.
