Earth Home TV Interview

We had a reporter come to our place yesterday and interview the wife and I. We gave them a tour through our earth home construction site, as it is now. We answered questions and sort of explained why we're doing it. They condensed the interview, of course, and put it on television lastnight.
If interested, here's a link to their website, which has text from the interview, as well as some thumbnail sized photos, and a link to video of the interview is also on there.

Here's the link:

PS. They also link to our earth home website on their page.

Very interesting to see it. How high are the ceilings on the dome? Will there be some fan or something that brings down the heat in the winter?

I was surprised to see that the walls and roof were built before the floors. What an adventure. How do you think costs compared to normal stick building?

I really liked the openness. Will there be a greenhouse/sunroom in the front like so many earthhomes have?

I couldn't find your website link at the tv page. Can you post it? I may just be tired...

I notice your site is very vague on construction costs. I understand that you're doing a lot of the labor yourself but realistically what would the investment be?

Because of personal finance issues, I'm not really wanting to share that information at this time, but we are keeping track of costs and will figure out some what of giving an idea after the house is built, as to cost per square foot. If I published right now, it would be a moving target anyway.
I will say that we're not rich. We have saved though and we're thrifty and also willing to do a lot of work ourselves.

In answering some of your other questions, the walls are 8 feet tall, and then they start going up to the point of the dome, which I think is around 12 feet.
Yes, they are very open, and that's what we like about them.

The reason the walls and roof were done before the floor is really simple. In order to do the roof, they had to have a trailer with the forms on it, and they pulled that into the module and then had a hydraulic jack to move the forms up into position before the concrete pour.
Because of the massive weight, if we'd poured the floors first, the weight of the trailer, with all that concrete it would be supporting, would have cracked the floors. So, the walls and roof are done first, and then the forms are jacked back down to the trailer and the trailer is pulled out of the module, and then the rest of the forms are removed from the walls.
Then they set up for the next module and do it all again. It's about a week per module, and the modules are 28x28 or 24x24, all with domed roofs/ceilings. Plus, we have a huge skylight in the shape of a octagon that is at the crest of the dome in our great room. This will provide additional light, as well as additional feeling of openness.

And what we've done isn't perfect (or for everyone), but it's right for us. We're working hard and enjoying the process (although today, I'm working my you-know-what off)(hint, it involves digging ... a lot of digging, and it's over 90 degrees Fahrenheit in the shade).

Hey HockeyFan,

The house looks beautiful !!!

Is that a Terra-Dome home? Kinda looks like one. We are talking to them about building a much smaller home for us ...

Good Luck and God Bless!!!

It is Terra-Dome, but there are a number of companies that are either resellers for Terra-Dome or do similar buildings with the exact same dimensions (as far as the modules).
