About 1 second for a 6" diameter round of frozen oak.

When you are having fun, what does time mean anyway? I split by hand and with a manual hydraulic splitter so as to keep up my devastating wrist shot.

White oak, green and slightly frozen. It just explodes!

I use a mall and spliting wedges. Gives me good excersize during the winter months.

I saw a reall cool thing once for splitting big rounds of wood. It was a pointed HEAVY chunk of cast iron, like a teardrop upside down, on a rope and pully. Put the wood on ground, pull iron thingy into air above it and then let go, it practicly exploaded the wood into nice usable bits.
dont think it would be much good for small bits though.

I split a little over three cords of green ash two autumns ago in just over two days, with a maul and a couple of wedges...great therapy.

I love to split wood. Its hard on the body but good at the same time. Some thing good about the feeling of knowing you made the heat in the winter happen with your back and time.

We used to split our wood for many years. The teens would help with that and the lugging of the wood. We are no longer able to do that and we buy wood all cut and split. DS suggested we buy the wood along with him in 4 ft lengths and he would cut and split it for both of us. Only one problem there. He does not live real close and I know we would be stuck with no firewood ready for the stove. (I did not just fall off the turnip truck.) When I was younger I enjoyed it but later as I aged it became more difficult.

I split about 90% of the wood we heated our house with last winter. I loved it. I guess it helps that I LOVE cold weather.
I enjoyed myself so I was not analyzing how long it took me...I have no idea...I am home anyway and taking care of everything at home is my "job" so the time it took didn't really matter...it was better for us than paying for split wood, and acquiring a splitter was not an option.
Not bad for a girl, huh?

My opinion on splitting wood is that it is great when you are going to burn it, it is not so great when you are trying to nail it up on your building.

michigan taylor,
to find free split firewood:
Go to michigan.
Look for a house with wood smoke coming from the chimney
Make sure there is no car in the driveway.
Go around back and you'll find lots of free split firewood by the back door or in a shed
I do it all the time, but not in Michigan... Michigan is too far... I do it in NC. ok, so maybe I don't.
tee hee hee
Anyhow, to answer your question for real...
I am surprised to see folks give away split firewood on Craigslist in the free section and on freecycle rather often. I spoze they aren't burning it and want it gone. There are also frequently offers about trees free for the taking.

Splitting
My DH and I split all the wood to heat our house. We use a big splitter with a 6 way wedge. It goes pretty quickly with the 2 of us, and the kids helping to stack. I used to split by hand, but there is just too much else we would rather do (and I am not fond of the cold). We use the splitter for business too, so we didn't have to justify the expense just for us when we bought it.
I would bet that a lot of the free wood being offered is gone by-punky and rotted. Although a few years back we gave away some nice oak because I don't like burning it. We have a small house, and it just makes too much heat! I answered an ad on Freecycle requesting wood and they lived right around the corner from me. Worked out nice for everybody.
As for free wood, my husband used to heat his shop with a little stove. He would get free pallets and burn them. They are often hardwoods, and burned really well for him. Maybe that would work for you Michigan Taylor.
Peace, Cathryn

My DH splits, by hand (cant afford anything else), all the wood for our winter heating. Its time consuming, but hey, you do what you have to do. No split wood, no heat. Its that simple.

By myself, I can split 10 face cord (3 1/3 full 4x4x8) cord in a good hard day of work using my two way hydraulic splitter.

Splitting
It takes us (DH and I) not quite an hour and a half to split and stack about a cord of wood with our splitter. Not the same workout as by hand, but I make it up in other ways.
Peace, Cathryn

Slabs from a sawmill.... they are even free alot of the times...
I'm not trying to start a little war here but whats the big deal with splitting wood? Now dont get me wrong I understand when its too big to move or put in the stove. But I never understood why pieces that were small enough to fit thru the stove door should be split... perhaps i have too much other stuff to do....
