Kentucky Homesteaders?

How many of you are from Kentucky, and what part? Everytime I see someone from Kentucky, I PM them to find out where they are. I'm always hoping someone is near me! I think it would be great if we could be kinda close to other Homesteaders, we'd have lots in common!

Right now, I am just outside of Owensboro, Kentucky. But my daughter and I will be moving to Dawson Springs, Kentucky, pretty soon. Our farm is actually in Caldwell County, I thought it was Hopkins County when I found the listing, but I guess we are just over the County line by Lake Beshears. We have horses, goats, dogs, cats and chickens. We hope to add Rabbits, Tamworths and Dexters soon.

Ok Kentuckians, where are you? And what do you raise on your homestead?

Good! I love to have coffee with good folks! I'll make the home made bread while I'm at it! LOL! Can you tell that I'm excited about the new farm? I simply can't wait, I've been calling it my own private green island, even though it's not an island at all. But it's 21 acres of pure green Heaven, and that's what matters! I'll get to hang out the welcome sign soon.

Misfit Is your land level pasture or hill? I looked at a home in KY but most of it was up a hillside (a very steep hillside.)

Hi, I'm in Ohio County, about midway between Bowling Green and Owensboro. Don't have enough land to really call myself a homesteader but have a garden, chickens, have gotten fairly self sufficient. hardly ever go to town and buy store bought stuff at all LOL

Marshall County, near Benton. The other side of Kentucky Lake coming from Caldwell County. We are just getting started on 11 acres with a few chickens, a small garden, and a house that is nearly completed.

Pulaski County ... guess you'd call it south/ east central ... or something like that anyway. About 60 miles directly south of Lexington (as the crow flies) ...

We have about 15 acres ... most of the original 10 acres had a LOT of trees and mostly steep sidehill but we're gradually getting a lot of that cleared. The other acreage is still mostly on a hill, but it's not as steep and was cleared farmland to start.

I'm actually much happier about being on a hillside than in the bottom here ... I'm originally from Montana, where you have your basic "high desert" climate and I'm probably never going to be really comfortable about flooding ... or bottom swampland!

Didn't realize until I moved here that you can have a sidehill swamp either!

We've got a small garden ... I can't do much gardening as I am very limited with the outside work I can do in the heat/humidity ... raise ponies/ horses so have lots of them ... started raising rabbits again (after 30 years) this past spring ... and they are increasing like rabbits are supposed to! Dogs and cats, of course ...

I had a milk cow when I lived in Montana, but didn't bring her with me when I relocated here ... with milk prices now, though, I'm starting to consider either a cow or a couple of milk goats.

DH and I aren't big meat eaters, so don't really think keeping or raising a steer or hog for meat would be very cost effective for us ... I don't particularly like raising chickens, we don't use a lot of eggs and I prefer rabbit to chicken anyway ... so probably won't expand into other livestock.

The one thing I would expand, if I could do the work, would be more garden ... but that just isn't going to happen. If I haven't acclimated to the climate here in 10 years, I'm not going to ... and in the summer, by the time I'm through with horse chores I have to be back in the house in the air conditioning.

We live in Cumberland county. We raise Scottish Highland cattle, Narragansett turkeys and an array of the usual homestead stuff! Love to garden and do it organically.

Hi Starr! I used to live in Nashville, and then ended up in Carthage! This area of Kentucky isn't like the Eastern portion, we have more level areas and rolling hills than the large hills you're refering to. My property is 21 acres of level ground, only one small rise where I hope to build eventually.

Wow I love this thread! I've wondered for a long time about other Kentuckians, and I'm finding there are a lot more than I thought!

I'm a wannabe homesteader living in georgetown kentucky.

I live in town and my house sits on very little land.

planted my first small garden this year, ever, so I've got a bunch to learn.

saving money to get some land hopefully in the next year, not sure where yet?

We're east of Cynthiana, in Harrison Co. We've met several good KY folks from this board. I feel for you if heat and humidity aren't your friends as you'll most certainly be meeting them. KY born and raised myself.

Hi Doris, sure glad you started this thread. It's really interesting to read about everybody.

I'm in central KY, five miles out of Lebanon. I live on an acre and a half that lives much larger due to being bordered on two sides by dairy farms. DH and I have lived in Marion County our entire lives. We're not true homesteaders now as we don't have any animals, but have been in our younger days. We still think like homesteaders though. I don't see how we'd ever change that.

Lordy, we're just now getting our garden in the ground, but expect a good fall harvest, hopefully right up to frost. We're planting pittypat squash, lima beans, broccoli, cauliflower, carrots, baby boo pumpkins, gourds, ornamental corn for the winter feeding of the cardinals, and we're going to try planting these sweet potato vine starts I've got rooting here inside in Mason jars. Our apple trees are loaded down this year, so already know we'll be making lots of apple butter.

We're blessed with family close by and good neighbors.
