Finally - clearing land for the barn (pics too)

Our county is at least 2 months behind in issuing building permits, but last week, they gave us permission to clear!!! :banana02: We've owned this property for 5 years now, we are so excited to finally get the barn in this fall. Finally - clearing land for the barn (pics too) - Homesteading Questions Here's the "before" picture. The broken tree is about where the new access road to the barn site is, you can see the original road curve to the left, that leads to the future house siteFinally - clearing land for the barn (pics too) - Homesteading Questions
and our view is starting to show of the Olympic Mt foothills

We are wanting to buy and build somewhere near the olympics. Sometime next year, we look to buy land (FINALLY). We are in a rental doing the seattle commute thing right now.

What a BEAUTIFUL place! Looks like you're going to have a barn real soon and then the fun starts! Have to fill it up with animals!

No, sorry I meant it has taken us 5 years to get to the point that we were ready to permit - Went thru 2 house designers until we found someone who understood our vision (we will be off-grid, passive solar design, lots of thermal mass with cement floors, overhangs, skylights that open for summer airflow/cooling, outdoor covered porch with wood fired bake oven and propane burner for summer canning, roof gutters designed for water catchment, etc) When we bought this place, we did not even know this area was part of our land until we had the boundaries surveyed and staked. Walking the property line, we discovered we owned the south side of this hill, at 600 ft elevation and once cleared, we should have an unobstructed view of Mt Rainier and Olympic foothills. The house will be at the highest point, and the land slopes south toward the barn area.

We have horses, sheep, turkeys & chickens, and I want nigerian dwarf goats after we move (did you see all that lovely brush on the perimeters for them to eat????) so no problem filling up the barn!

4th of July weekend we will be there, cutting all the wood! The contractor is saving all the decent logs and I want to get started on our firewood. Contractor sees these small trees as trash, DH wanted to just burn it all, I INSISTED on saving as much as possible! I got my way, mostly because the burn ban is now in effect and it makes more sense to buck up the logs.

Hi Cindy, I also commute to Seattle to work, from our current house on the eastside. I understand completely! There is still land for sale, in our community, but I'm astounded by how much the prices have gone up since we bought ours! Most of our family thought we were absolutely nuts but they are city folk. Geez, is it hard to come to the daily grind when I want to be there cutting wood and laying out building placements!

Yea, I am hoping the current real estate debacle will keep the prices right where they are for a year, as over inflated as that is. The "experts" (whoever they are) are saying that the RE market is going to continue to crash for that long, and then start to rebound. Unfortunately we won't be able to do anything before that.

We just moved here from TN, so we haven't had an opportunity to even decide WHERE we want to buy land yet, except that it will be near the olympics. The coastal side (near Kalaloch) is the area we first fell in love with 3 years ago when we decided we wanted to try to move here, but that is pretty much all national park! Frankly, it took so long to get "the job" that would move us here, that we had sort of given up. We are still just glad to be here AT ALL. Now we are renting and saving for a year from now when we will buy and our 4 year journey will come to an end (beginning). Waiting is hard sometimes.

Yes, 40-60" per year, but July, Aug & Sep are usually very dry. We plan to catch and store rain water for house and gardens!
