1/4 cup granulated sugar and 3/4 cup water was the mix I read in a bird magazine 10 years ago and have used since.

Howdy

We follow the 4 to 1 also. Sheesh with that Hi-test available down they-ah in 'Bammy, it's a wonder they ever make it up here to us!!

I was ground zero for 2 of them zooming through our porch today, as I was changing the tank (feeder). I have read they go 40 MPH and faster. I'm sure these 2 werer going 40 or more. I could hear their wing slicing the air like they were made out of metal. The amazing facts below are from:

www.worldofhummingbirds.com/ and say they go even faster

Rick

How fast do hummingbird's wings beat per second?

Hummingbird's wings can beat at about 70 times per second in normal fight and about 200 times per second during a high speed dive.

**********************************
How fast does a hummingbird fly?

A hummingbird flies at an average speed of 25-30 miles per hour and can do a fast dive at up to 60 miles per hour.

I got two humming birds who wintered in my green house, nesting in one of my potted ferns and fed on the 1/4 to 3/4 mixture and did just fine.

Apparently both ratios are adequate .

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hummingbird

"Homemade "nectar" can be made by adding 1 part white, granulated table sugar to 4 parts water. During the pre migratory and post migratory periods in Spring and Fall the ratio may be enriched to 1 part sugar to 3 parts water to assist birds that are about to expend immense energy or have already lost bulk post migration"

That's wild to think of them nesting that low to the ground.
