Needing a little first aid info

I had a small farm accident about 30 minutes ago and I do not want to go to the emergency room and spend the day. There is no one here but me. I have a cut about an inch long but deep on my arm on the inside about 6 inches above my wrist. There was flesh about the size of a marble protruding but after cleaning my hands I pushed that back in with the exception of a sliver that wants to protrude. The cut has been cleaned and some neosporin applied and I have something like a butterfly bandage holding it shut. I want advice on the piece of flesh that was left protruding. Will it just atrophy and slough off as the wound heals? I have had a tetanus shot within the last 5 years. Thanks

Sorry, I can't help you on the actual medical part of your question. When we have something like this happen, we usually go to the local Dr. office. He doesn't want anyone bleeding in the waiting room and will take us right in and we don't have an all day adventure in the emergency room. For something like you have described that isn't a life threatening condition, that might be a viable option for you.

If you don't see any blood vessels in it and it isn't bleeding itself, it's probably part of the subcutaneous layer, mainly fat and some connective tissue.

I'd do my best to push it all back in.

Do you have any idea how deep the cut is?

Nothing more than fatty tissus might stick out unless the cut is really, really deep.

First off I'm not a doctor nor do I play one on TV and free advice is usually worth just what you pay for it. With that said.

The odds are that "small piece of flesh" is just fatty tissue. If it is red like muscle I'd suggest going to the doc, if its sort of yellow I wouldn't worry about it.

Keep an eye on it for the next couple of days. If you notice any of the following get to the doc quickly: the wound it really warm, it has some nasty drainage, it smells 'funny', it and the area around it gets red. This time of year and being outside a lot means infections get started and spread quickly.

How did you do it, the cut? If it is a deep one, you will need to be totally sure it is clean.

If you were in my family I would say "Don't be a baby! Get your butt down to the clinic and have 'em fix you up!" But you aren't, so I wont...

The cut is deep IMO. Then again it is on me! I would guess it is 1/2 to 5/8 inch deep. I am rather decent at judging measurements. I saw things in the hole that I had rather not see, particularly on me. It bled a fair amount and I could see vessels and what I thought may be tendons along with muscle/flesh. I got most of everything pushed back in, just a sliver of red flesh was left protruding.

I wouldn't worry too much about the little bit of flesh.

I would worry anout the mechanism of injury.

What cut you? It is good that you have had a tetanus shot, but a booster is almost certainly a good idea.

I would not worry about the protrusion very much.I would make sure the wound was washed out good.If it bled out heavy that would have cleaned it out pretty good.Keep an eye on it for redness------especially if you get red streaks running up your arm.Blood poison will kill you.You will be able to see if it is healing all right.Anything is a question to you------get to the doc.

wwubben Should I see the red streaks I will be on my way to the Doc immediately. I have had that occurrence and I know the consequences. I will watch the injury closely to verify it is healing.

If it were my arm, I would flush the wound with 35% peroxide, cut with two parts water, then when it is completely clean, apply a high quality salve and a dressing for about 12-24 hours. After that I'd soak it every 8-12 hours in epsom salts water, as hot as I could stand, and sleep with the wound lightly salved but uncovered after a couple days. I'd only cover it thereafter if I was working.

Peroxide and hot epsom soaks are your friends.

If it gets icky, you could use the old-time but medically appropriate remedy of bandaging it with a sugar or honey dressing. Bacteria can't survive in an environment of pure sugar.

Can you tell I play doctor with myself, lol? I figure if I doctor animals there's no reason I can't manage most of my boo-boos, too.

The relevence of the depth really depends on the person. 1/2" on my sis is nothing. But for me (skin and bones) it is bad! The fact that you are questioning what to do tells me this is something that you should probably have looked at. I would just go to the Drs. office. And I wouldn't call first, just show up. (Like you didn't know what else to do) That way they can't blow you off.

That is good. Keep it clean (soak in Epsom salts) and moist with the Neosporin; you might want to apply a cold pack (bag of frozen peas works), elevate your arm when at rest and take some Tylenol or asprin for the pain. Just be sure to put a towel between the cold pack and your skin.

It might and it might end up being a raised scar; does it really matter? If so then a doctor’s visit may be in store for you so that they can cut off any jagged edges and stitch the wound. Otherwise be sure to keep it clean and use the antibiotic ointment; bandage when working and butterfly bandage when not.
Speedy recovery to ya and keep us posted...

Doesn't it say on the Neosporin package "Consult a doctor before use on deep puncture wounds"?

How is your arm? If it were me I would go to the doctor...mostly to get pain killers for the current wound and future accidents that are bound to happen

If there are red streaks going up your arm it indicates blood poisoning.
If not, keep it all stuffed back in there, taped together with neosporin on it.
The excess will dry up and you can cut it off later. Ice it for swelling. Ibruprofen for pain unless or have a good suppy of beer.
It will leave a nice scar later unless you have some #2 fishing line you can sew it up with and have a scar that looks like you sewed it up with fishing line.
I'm not a DR. I just know how to do self damage control.

The hydrogen peroxide I get from the drug store is 3% so I don't need to cut it. I would use the whole bottle to be sure I completely flushed out the wound. Follow that with 4-6 surgical staples and neosporin. Bandage lightly to keep clean and dry. Check daily.
