Any tips on buying cheaper propane?

Is it true that it's a bit cheaper to buy propane in the summer while demand is lower vs. winter? Chris

Yes.

It's also wise to call around to every propane distributor in the area to find the lowest price.
It's also wise to own your own tank so that you CAN shop around freely.
The bigger the tank, the better.

Usually. You should also look around and see which dealers will let you contract propane now for winter delivery vs. just selling you a tankful now.

Make sure you price Tyendinaga Propane, they seem to be really aggressive with their pricing in the last year or so.

I used to watch the futures markets for propane in order to get the lowest priced fill. Typically the lowest price was in July so that is when I had my tank filled.

I really don't know what the retesting requirement is for propane tanks. To be honest I've never heard of such a test even being done in Kansas. That doesn't mean that it shouldn't be done. My tank was purchased as a used tank in the mid-1960s and has never been retested, nor the safety of it questioned.

Several on here have said that if a tank is run completely empty including pressure then it may require a test. I may run my tank to 0% but I never use all of the pressure from it for that very reason.

I wouldn't bet the farm on anything that we use to know is still relevant, when it comes to energy prices.

Natural gas is pennies away from 13$, and keeps rising... If I needed propane, diesel, heating oil, I'd buy now... as much as I could afford... it may not ever get any cheaper...

We put in a larger tank so we could do one buy in the summer, and we also team up with our neighbor that does the same -- we found a guy who is about 30 miles away, but is willing to do the trip to get both our tanks once a year, and he is cheaper.

Best way to keep propane costs down is lots of insulation

Now that it's summer if you order now you can usually lock it in at a lower price because demand is down.
