Kind of hard to type this, but here goes-

Whoo whooooooo hooo
Whoo whooooooo hooo

Middle of the afternoon, in Iowa.

Anybody know what this might be?

Dang, thanks for the fast answer! I googled it though, and that's not the call I'm hearing, different tempo.

How about an owl... it's not unheard of to hear/see them during daylight hours.

Try this page http://www.owlpages.com/sounds.php
and see if any sound familiar. Even if it's not an owl the sounds on this page a way cool.

I hear owls calling around here almost all the time, day and night, very cool and one of the benefits of living in the woods on a river.

Me too NWoods... I sat on my porch last night listening to a screech owl, a barn owl and couple of hoot owls calling back and forth.

One of the disadvantages is I laid awake half the night listening to a bird (can't think of what it's called) making dozens of different calls... continuously... for hours... right outside my bedroom window... ughhh

The call changes with the weather so my Grandma called them raincrows but there is no such critter.

The yellow-billed cuckoo is commonly called a "raincrow" in my part of the country. (Kansas)

A mockingbird will repeat the same call 3 times or more before changing.
