What kind of antique fencing is this?

Sorry no photo. I tried to draw a fascimile thereof in Paint. Please excuse my truly horrible art work. (Wouldn't Boleyz be proud? LOL).

The actual fence is much fancier than what I drew, but this should give you a general idea.

What kind of antique fencing is this? - Homesteading Questions

It's in rolls. It's been laying around here for about 20 years, and it was very old when it was given to my mother. The gray lines in the pic are very heavy iron wire about 3/8 inch thick. It is not woven but is held together with heavy clips.

My brother is FINALLY going to use it to fence in the front yard, after promising to for about 15 years. Now I won't have to worry about staying with the dogs when I put them out to use the bathroom. They won't be able to go anywhere. :baby04:

A few weeks ago I spent a couple of hours googling antique fence, and I couldn't find this stuff. It must be something people used before chain link was invented.

Does anyone have a clue about what it is and how old it is, and any interesting history about this type of fencing?

I can see something of a resemblance, but the stuff laying out here has straight smooth wire. It's very stiff and heavy.

It looks like it might be that welded wire that was used to fence in yards around 50's era Craftsman style bungalows? If that it is what you have, I have seen people who restore houses to "period condition" looking for that stuff.

I don't know what it is but I really like it. Congrats on getting a fenced yard for your dogs built. Wish I had one. :-/

It's not welded. It's held together with these flat clip things that fold in on themselves. Each clip is a piece of iron about an inch square with 4 flaps that fold in. Each flap is about 3/4" long, I'm guessing.

It's so heavy and stiff it could nearly stand on it's own without posts.

It takes 2 men to carry a 50' roll, it's that heavy.
