Propane brag

I was just burning old records and came across a propane receipt from 2001. Since I just bought propane this week I was curious and grabbed it. This year I paid $1.99 per gallon. In 2001 I paid $.87 per gallon. Pretty hefty inflation rate!

What really impressed me is this year I needed 400 gallons. In 2001 I needed 775 gallons. Same one person living here. Same house, but crawlspace is now sealed and has foam insulation. Another 12" of insulation in the attic. New tankless hot water heater. Sun room added to house, doesn't add any heat but does serve as tempered area along part of an outside wall.

Now might be a good time for folks to insulate the heck out of at least one room in their house so they will be able to afford to heat at least one room for the winter. With your experience of using a lot less fuel because of new insulation hopefully some folks will follow suit before the cold comes again.

If freezing pipes were a consideration, isn't there some heated pipe wrap which could be put on the pipes? Then just heating the pipes and limiting the rest of the heated space might make next winter affordable?

I called the gas company last summer and told them to bring me a thousand gallon tank and fill it. I got the LP for 1.64. I only use 200 gal. a year for the stove and water heater. How much do you think I would save if I bought a hot water on demand heater? Might be well worth the cost in the next few years as it LP will follow other fuel prices. Have you checked the store for a gallon of cooking gas? Geeez! $9.00 a gallon.
