Wet dog smell in a rental home?

OK so I just went to look at a rental home, we've been having a hard time finding a place that would work for us in the area... this one smelled pretty strongly of wet stinky dog. The carpets had just been cleaned, and so I don't know if the smell would subside after a while? I'm not a dog owner so I don't know if the smell would eventually go away?

When I was a kid we rented a house that one room they had raised dogs in. It smelled really bad my mother painted the room, floor and all. It got rid of the odor.

The only way we got rid of "dog smell" in the one room in my boyhood home was to rip out the carpet and seal the floor.
We varnished it, sealed it up. This was in "the day" and we were poor, so varnish might not be the best choice but we had it and it worked.

Wet dog smell only last a little while if it's just from a wet dog...like it just got wet out in the rain or something. I would be very leary of that...although I would rather smell wet dog than old ciggies or cigars...yucker-rooo-ski!

Ask the idiot who is trying to rent this house to you if, they really expect you to put up with this wet dog stink? What you smell is what you get. Then walk away quickly.

Nature's Miracle for dogs (they have it for cats, too) would help with the scent. Just put some in a sprayer with the proper amount of water and spray the area (doesn't take much!). All the larger pet stores (chains) have it. Good for other smelly stuff, too.

We clean carpet professionally for a living...and the only thing I can think of is, if the carpet was still wet, then it could be real wool carpet... that will go away when it dries, but no matter what, wet wool smells like wet dog. (imho)

Now if the carpet was dry, then, no the smell will not just "go away". You can do several thing to "get rid of it"... in the carpets...we do not recommend it (cause it is hard on your carpet, but if it is a rental then I would probally do it, lol) but I would dump baking soda on it, all over and then after a day or so, then I would vacuum it really well...make sure you empty the vacuum after...

Lastly, if the carpets were just cleaned, the smell could have been in the house itself and what I mean by that, is that you can usually change the air filters and such to the air conditioner and such and that will really help...also if there were any curtains or mini blinds...if they are washed then the smell could supside too...that is, if it is no longer in the carpets.

Good luck.

Well, I'm pretty sure we aren't going to rent that place... I know they had a dog and they were there for over a decade. There are other reasons why it isn't the best place for us, I was just kinda wondering how "easy" of a fix it was but I'm definitely not going to move in to a place that smells like that.
