Dachshund Owners..Ever have this Problem?

This is a post from my wife's blog. She's heavy into Digital Scrapbookking, so there is a lot of "fluff" to wade through....

Scroll down to where it says "Gross Alert" (don't worry, no photos....).

Your Doxie (or other dogs....) do this?
Ours is pretty goofy, but I was just wondering....

Scrounger, I have several Doxies, and have never seen this problem in any of them. Don't know what area you live in, but I wonder if the toads are similar to the ones in Hawaii, that produce a toxin on their skin, so if she is getting that in her mouth, it makes her salivate? Does she do it at other times, or just when picking up the toads? Jan in CO

My boy seems to use his hunting skills on mice and baby birds this time of year

No toad attacks yet!

We have two Doxie's, both know better then to to put a toad in their mouths. Although they will follow them around . They spend a lot more time trying to catch frogs in the pond. Now , my son's Great Dane/ Lab cross, Chloe, knew better too. We taught the dogs to leave the toads alone. We had a huge toad whom was there on the porch every night for years. We always made sure we didn't step on him. Then one day Chloe came in the house with Drool and foam coming out her mouth and she was miserable with it. My first thought was my toad! I went out to see and sure enough, Chloe had pulled it out of its day time hiding place and killed it! She didn't maul it, but it was enough to give her a reaction. She has not got near a toad since. She was so embarrassed to have been found out!

I've got two also. One is a hunter, the other a sun catcher. Neither do the drool thing...

This is old, Oct 06, but I knew I had heard a story on NPR about a dog that was addicted to licking toads!!

http://www.npr.org/templates/story/s...tor---=6376594

Looks like your dogs are going to need a 12-Step program Scrounger!

Live Southern toads are toxic to dogs. Something on their skin. My doxie mix no longer tries to eat live ones, but relishes old dead ones from the street, the ones that have a "freeze-dried" look!!! Yes, it's gross, but she is a dog! To the OP: pls. be careful w your dogs; at the vet school here, they say a few die every year from ingesting live toads. That slathery saliva is not a joke...except to doxies! ldc

I have a doxie. He doesn't hunt for toads or drool. He is totally adorable. What a great breed!

My weiner dog MR Fonzie is the resident toad licker/biter here he did the same thing but I seem to have broken him of the habit by coating a live toad in a few drops of Tabasco ( sorry mr toad) but it so far has worked now if I could only break him of his wanting to mark his territory on any plastic object in sight( Garbage can , laundry hamper ect.)
LoL

Ours drool and foam at the mouth like a 'mad' dog! We have had doxies for 35yrs and all but one has done this --and the one that doesn't is too lazy to chase any thing!

First time, I saw my first doxie, foaming at the mouth with slimy drool (like a boxer has). I grabbed her up and rushed her to the vets office--only to have him laugh at me and explain that she had been messing with toads!!

We've got three or four doxies running around (haven't checked today, there might be more ), and we have toads. Several have grabbed one, but they all let it go quickly. We have plenty of other distractions, chickens, ducks, geese, quail, rabbits, goats, squirrels, fish, etc.

Mebbe you need some more distractions for ya'lls doxies... Send a self addressed stamped BOX and I'll ship you some of my 'extra' distractions...

My Jack Russell, Fred, has caught [gnawed on] a toad a couple of times. Being a small dog [<15 lbs] he ended up not only foaming / salivating heavily but throwing up uncontrollably. After being lethargic for a day or so he snapped out of it. Given the chance, the idiot will still try and catch toads.

Something to make note of:

Quote:
However, the venom is highly toxic to pets. Dogs, which are the most likely pet to come into contact with a toad, have a high probability of dying if untreated. The Colorado River toad and the giant toad (also called the marine toad) are the two most common venomous toads found in the United States.

The Colorado River toad can be found along large streams in the southwestern United States, from Arizona to southern California (and Mexico). This toad wouldn't win any awards for beauty; its brown/green skin is usually covered with warts. They grow to be about three to seven inches long. The giant toad is not as common, but can be found in south Texas and Florida.
Cheers,
Huck

Hmmm. Ours prefers underpants and rats. We tossed the dumb cat in after a rat the other day. He bolted out from under the counter like he was shot out of a cannon! The dog however ( who happens to be 1/3 the size of said cat) was in there like stink on a pig!!! She grabbed that sucker and then dropped it jumping over a box. Well Mr. rat proceeded to shoot up my pant leg ( ---- you bell bottoms!!!) At which point the dog became enrage as "Mr. Rat" was attacking mommy!. I was screaming, the rat was clawing and the evil wienie was biting anything she could get a grip on!!! Mr. Rat then bolted for the living room with the loonie wiener hot on his heels. Needless to say my carpet is ripped up where she started shredding it to get the rat! the rat met his demise with a pellet gun.. Things are back to normal around here. However I may just be scarred for life :banana02:
