Yurt afficianados check this out!

For a very long time now I've been considering a yurt. A couple of things have prevented me from purchasing one. Portability of the currently manufactured yurts(they basically aren't portable) and price. My online name pretty much says it all. I travel A LOT. So rather than a traditional yurt I need something that is light weight( my little toyota is doing all it can do with hauling my motorcycle), easily set up in a reasonable length of time by one person, inexpensive enough that I can pay cash for it, strong and durable, and looks nice so that it will be allowed in a campground on a weekly or monthly basis. I think I have found it!!! www.shelter-systems.com Be sure to check out the testimonials page. I found it really helpful. As soon as I can get it ok'd with my current boss(I'm working at a campground) I'll be ordering one.

That is a pretty interesting concept - love to see one in person.

I love them!! Good find.
I have been thinking/looking to build some sort of sunporch infront of our yurt and one of these just may foot the bill.
thanks for the link and good luck in your travels.

I would try to find out what they mean about strong winds....not everyone has the same idea of what speeds make them strong. Of course with traveling you could just avoid places with lots of wind.

These shelters stay put in the 50-60 mph winds in the desert, but you might want to write the guys who build them and ask for specs.

Not to be a wet blanket, but it looks like a nice tent to me. You won't be able to live in it comfortably when it's cold. As I understand it, yurts serve as year around homes, and can be heated. This one looks like a yurt, but will function as a tent, I think.

Just thought I'd let ya'll know that I received my dome. Got it assembled and up(took a wee bit longer and more effort than advertised) and I love it!!! The spaciousness is awesome. It actually has about 50 sq ft more area than the 27 ft RV I had been living in. Much more usable space too. The glowing light is really cool too. While the sun is shining the interior is radiant with light. I'm going to make a few improvements. Namely ordering some nice wide velcro to secure the floor to the walls with. We had 50 mph winds this last week and I found that it blew bits of pine needles under the edge where the floor wasn't properly weighted down. I think the velcro will solve that little problem. During those winds you couldn't tell it was windy while inside the dome. No shaking or rattling at all! I've had lots of folks ask about it since it is so cool looking. I'm really pleased with how nice it looks. I should have some pictures of it to post next week. Got to get through the Fathers day weekend madness first(I work at a campground) before I'll have free time during the day to take photos.

You can get a liner for this just like you can with a standard yurt and heat it. That won't be a concern for me. It's main advantage is that it is easily portable. I really dislike cold so I just move to somewhere warmer when it starts to get cold. It gets down around 45-50 where I'm currently located at night. The dome totally negates the wind so well that all I need is an extra blanket.
