wierd bite or sting?

Okay I was bit or stung on the end of my finger a bit ago I am trying to figure out what got me. I was throwing flakes of hay to the goats. The immediate sensation was like I touched something hot. Then intense pain down to my wrist felt like someone hacked my hand off.I looked thinking I got stung .No mark or wound.Bee sting pain lets up pretty fast but this lasted a long time. Then my finger started to swell from the second knuckle up and is completly numb like I have had a nerve block with lidocane. I have taken benedryl, used ice .It has been about 2 hours now and the finger is still numb swelling is about gone still no mark where I was bitten??Any Ideas on what I could have taken hold of?Will my finger fall off?

i wouldn't rule out a snake bite. you could have encountered a copperhead who was hunting for mice. next guess would be a brown recluse spider. you should be able to see some sort of mark where you were bitten.

No puncture wound unless somehow it is under my fingernail. There looks to be a purple spot coming up deep in the tissue?

The pain you describe sounds like a hornet sting to me

If it is causing this much discomfort, maybe a trip to the ER just to rule out anything dangerous.

I ended up at the hospital.Still don't know what got me.Started with abdominal cramps, then head ache, then vomiting??Dr.said I had all the symptoms of snake bite but no injection site? Couldn't do much but treat the symptoms unless we knew what I got hold of.I know it isn't wasp or hornet sting as I have had those and they turn red hot and itch in a few hours. My middle finger is swollen ,numb and cold. They gave me a couple of shots of something one hurt like the devil and some steroid pills to take and call if I get any tissue necrosis or find what bit me. I hope I squashed and killed the little devil dead!!!Thanks for the input.Kind of groggy goig to bed now.

Well I think I figured out what got me polistes carolina. Large red wasp. My finger still doesn't want to bend right.I found the description of the sting with a pain meter of 1 to 4 this one being a 4.0.Said you may as well lay down and scream.Yup that describes it.Saw another one today it buzzed my head while I was throwing hay. I need to find the nest.Ick that thought just gave me the shivers.....

Ouch, that bought back memories for me.
I was helping my dad do something in the barn. I don't remember what now, but I grabbed some hay and got a red wasp in my hand along with the hay.
Gosh, that hurt so bad! My dad chewed plug tobacco.
He took the wad of chew out of his mouth and stuck it in the palm of my hand and closed my hand over it.
I was like EEWWW, but he said leave it alone and keep it in your hand. It will help take the sting out of it. He was right it did help.
However, it sounds like you might be somewhat allergic to their sting.
I have been stung several times and it only hurt and swelled a little.
I didn't have all the reaction that you did.

good possibility. The nerve is still dead like it was cut.The reaction I had was kind of like food poisioning .I have been around red wasps alot and have never been stung. They are big enough you can hear them coming and usually they fly away and don't come after you.Not like a hornet which will chase you.But if you grab hold of one I guess it kind of ----es them off
