OUCH - And Thats Not All I Said

Was kneeling down and cutting metal roofing today when I realized that my right foot was smack dab on top of a fire ant mound. I have well over 100 ant stings on my right leg and untold number on my left leg. Only saving grace is my left leg is completely numb and I can't feel the stings there. Stings on my right leg as high as my inner thigh. I won't tell you what happened to the ant mound, but it ain't legal.

Triple ouch !! I was talking to a friend today about the fire ant (and chigger) bites and how I am allergic to them...he told me the Dr. told his wife to get a bottle of green alcohol, dissolve a bottle of aspirins in it, and spray it on the bites. I am going to try this to see if he is right...they swear it helps.

I hope you nuked that ant pile. I hate 'em. I hope you heal up quickly, and please watch out for infection. If you can take benadryl it often helps with the itch and inflammation.

I was just out yesterday here at my new home patrolling with a container of Orthene. That's one thing I do buy regularly. It's not cheap but it does work if you keep after the ant piles. I want to try that new stuff on the market you broadcast in the yard but haven't boughten any yet.

Apply the liquid child's benadryl directly on the bites. We did this when my cousin 18 mos old was severly bitten. After an hour or so she was fine. No scaring.

I don't know what to tell you about bites, because I've never been able to find any comfort for it. But I'll tell you what does seem to feel good... put a pot of water on the stove until a rolling boil... then carefully take it over, and pour it onto the ant colony slowly. No more problems from that particular ant colony for a while!

That's enough to make a saint cuss. Gee, ONE fire ant bite hurts; I can't imagine hundreds. By the way, my husband tried one of the "once a season" fire ant treatments last year--several times. I say Orthene or Amdro and stay after them. I hope you feel better soon.

I have finally found something that will work on the fire ants, it's "Eliminator" from wally world, $13.00 for 20 lbs, sprinkle it on the bed and water it in, large beds will come back smaller but if you stay with it you can really eliminate them and then every time you see a small starter bed, dose it. The chemical in this is Bifenthrin, some bad stuff if you get it inside you, wear protection when handling it. The best treatment for the stings that I have found is Miracle II Neutralizer, Colloidal Silver and Tea Tree Oil, the quicker you get it on the better it works.
Is there anything good about fire ants? I've heard they eat termites but don't know if it's true.

YES - they have just about eliminated both Ticks and Rattlesnakes from this area. I try to keep them outside of my property line. My chickens love them though. Scratch scratch and then peckpeckpeck.
