electric use question...

we have a lamp that has three bulbs, so it's 1, 2, 3, 4, which equals bright, brighter, brightest and off. if one of the bulbs blew and is taken out, when you use the lamp is that empty socket still generating/using electric?

I don't know if I asked that in a way that makes sense.

No, If you are trying to cut back on electricity usage and not use all three bulbs----then, if you have small kids that might could get to the lamp and stick things(fingers etc) into the empty hole------I would put/leave a blown bulb in the empty hole.

Yes, the socket will still be "live" when you turn the switch to the appropriate setting. If there is a dead bulb in the socket it will not draw power, but an empty socket can give someone a nasty shock.
