Did I BLOW the pump?!

we've got a high volume low pressure pump. We were burning off some brush and it started to rain. I shut the sprinkler off and accidently left the pump running. The rain stopped a couple of hours later and I walk out and hear the pump running. Oh S%^! I walk over and look at the pump and it has a dark substance (looks like oil) at the outlet. I'm not sure if i blew the packing in the pump. WHAT CAN I DO?!

What outlet? If you burn't the packing, the pump could have sucked oil out of the overheated gearbox/coupling as vacumn increased at the packing gland. Restart the pump and if it works ok, be happy. Shutting off the discharge of a centrifugal pump is nowhere as damaging as shutting off the suction, or water inlet.

it works and pumps it just pulses kinda. The water comes out fine but you can tell its pulsing. Maybe its just the pump. The top outlet.
