Just thought I'd share...
I am now an EMT!! I have to finish the licensing part but I took my written test yesterday and passed! The skills test was completed about 2 months ago. We live in a rural area and the closest ambulance is at least 30 minutes away. That is about how far the closest QRU(quick response unit) is also. Our ambulance service was down to 4 EMTs. The class I was in had 7 students so we almost tripled the EMT count. Anyway, I just wanted to share.

CONGRATS! You will love it when you get into it.
I have been an EMT for about ayear now in the same situation, about 25 miles from town, small dept. There are just 3 of us.
This is just so many words till you get your first one... You cannot and will not save them all... life happens and so does dead. I was lucky it was my first call. I was 0-1 for a long time...

You DID it! It's YOURS !
Caongratulations!
I will never be an EMT: I take too long to think when the pressure is on! To be an EMT, you have to be FAST under pressure! I admire that!

Prepare to live with a pager 24/7/365. You will also get phone calls and visitors at all hours needing your help, once they learn of your capabilities.
Seriously though, you MUST learn to "compartmentalise" that portion of your life or it will consume you-- and not in a good way. The multiple fatality MVA's or Christmas morning suicide can weigh heavily on you, if you let them.
Congratulations------------

I, too, am an EMT for our local volunteer squad. You will get addicted to it. In our family, I am EMT, my husband is a driver and so is our son, and our daughter in law is an EMT studying to be a medic. Son, DIL and husband all also run on our Rescue unit that responds when there is an entrapement and the jaws of life are needed. Our grandson is a medic and firefighter.
Congratualations on passing your tests. They are not easy!! I was surprised how much knowledge an EMT has; it isn't just basic first aid.
Proud of you!!

Yay! Congrats!!!! I worked as an EMT for a few years before becoming a full time Paramedic. It's a job I love, and can't imagine my life without it.
You'll see the "best of the worst" in people, and in all situations. Gruesome, funny, heartbreaking. Sometimes all of it in one day. Sometimes all of it in one patient. In all of those moments, no matter how big or small, I have never felt closer to God.

Thanks to all for the congrats! I am an emergency dispatcher already so although I haven't been on the scene of many medical emergencies yet I have heard plenty of them. I think that being an EMT has helped me become a better dispatcher. We are an all volunteer squad that serves the entire county. There are only about 3500 people in the county but they are spread out. I have also joined the local CISM (critical incident stress management) team. They are the folks that are there at the debriefing after a major event, like a mass casulty or fatal accident. The team services other counties besides the one I live in. I haven't been on the team for very long and they haven't had a meeting since I officially joined. I am hoping that the training I will receive from that will help me deal with all I will see on the ambulance. I am only an EMT-B. Our squad has no EMT-I's and I'm not sure how long that takes. The EMT-B took about 6 months at 6 hours/week.
