Question + 10% to that Rebate Check

Here's a link that describes two major stores Kroger's & Sears adding 10% to a purchased gift card when you bring in your rebate check. Now the internet is ripe with rumors that other major chain stores are joining in.
http://www.fivecentnickel.com/2008/0...ate/#more-1586

While our money when spent @ stores usually goes to Aldi's & Aunt Sally's, we have already decided that the rebate money would be spent on items that would A) make money like installing a hitch so we could offer delivery of firewood, or B) save money like update from a 15 y.o. upright freezer to a new chest, install more solar applications like lights & heaters.
Replacement windows were on the agenda but since the feds took away the energy tax credit the last 6 remaining can stay sealed up with bubblewrap for another year.
When I called our local Sears the salesman was very clueless. Sears website mentions nothing about it.

So my questions to everyone has anyone any personal expirence with using this promotional? Or at least seen it advertised by a store?

Lots of rebate sales starting up. I'd wait 3 to 4 weeks for them to get in full swing and you'll see 30 to 50% off rebate sales.

Here - Smith's came out with an offer--whether you have a real check or got it direct deposited--for every increment of 300 that you bring in you'll get a 'gift card' loaded with 330... I wasn't considering this when it was Sears type companies that I don't need anything from - but since this is a grocery store that I do go to when I am 'in town' and they have good case lot sales and discounts on their gas depending on how much you spend on groceries--some of my rebate may be going there now.

I would like to take advantage of the 10% off or whatever, but for all the people who have auto deposit, I wonder what they can do? Just bring in $600 cash for the card?

our Kroger is advertising + 10% added to the cards when you buy a gift cards for $300, $600, or $1200 (so the card is worth $330, $660...) It starts friday, goes until some time in July, and says nothing about rebate checks. Since they are already getting most of our gas and grocery money, I am planning the shopping for Friday this week!

Here, they said Albertson's and K-Mart are adding 10%, and Reasor's will add $25 for each $300, up to $100. Best Buy is "working on a bonus", but hasn't made an announcement of exactly what yet.

I'm also thinking that if we wait a little while they'll have some really good offers, lol.

As for the direct deposit people, maybe you could take a copy printed from your bank that shows the government load for the rebate?? I bank online and could print off a page showing where they made the deposit, but if you don't bank online I'm sure your bank could print it out for you.

You need to be very careful about any restrictions or when the card expires. If the card is only valid for 30 days would it be worth it? Read the fine print.

I work at Menards for my day job. They are offering the 10% bonus thing. If you need conventional building supplies, I guess that would be okay.

I try not to buy too much there because I need to use the money elsewhere. But depending upon your needs, there could be some pretty good deals to be had.

The only problem with that is all those stores have already raised thier prices to compensate for the $30.00 that they are trying to convince folks that they will be getting for nothing.

I know Rockytopsis, but not enough that it's cheaper for me to drive farther. for what I buy, the gas would be more than any potential savings. So Kroger it is, and I'll take their 10%.

In 30 days $330 will be long gone on gas and groceries for my household!

Thanks for all the info.
I will more than likely be stocking up on a few food items that we can't produce ourselves like sugar & beef, and clothing like Winter gear for the children.
As I posted our little car is gonna get a hitch & an upgrade on the shocks/struts ect.
Also have a '68 Montgomery Ward Tent Camper that once we replace the tires can be used for local lite hauling both for our selves & neighboorhood Antique shops.
After that then replacement of all the batteries in 32 solar lights, & purchases of materials that can't be bought curb shopping for solar heaters.
Want to start buying the materials to install a wood stove like the pipe system, hearth title, stove, ect. what ever we find on sale.
3 years ago bought a set of chimmney cleaning brushes on sale. Some projects take longer than others.
Oh and a new bigger red wagon like the metal one's @ TS since I take the shoeleather express here in the city.

My main tax check is going toward braces on child #3 and the main roof fund.
Hopefully the braces along with other medical expenses will total enough to be a tax write off for 2008.
Thanks for all the info.
I'll make it a point to read the Sunday paper @ work (too fugal to buy my own copy) & see what is being offered in our area.
