Wristwatches

I need a new wristwatch for work/daily wear - something that can take a little abuse. I'd like to buy American, if such a thing exists - if not, I'll consider any non-chinese alternative that will last a few years. Money IS an object, but I'm willing to pay for quality.

I have no idea where Timex watches are made now but I buy the Indiglo ones that light the dial by a push of the stem. For less than $20 they run for several years then a new battery gives them several more years before replacement is needed.

I do ditch the el cheapo band and put on a good expandable band like the Spidel Twist-flex.

i'll second the timex recommendation. can't be beat for cost and function. i think i paid <$30 for my current one 5+ years ago. it looks like death from the abuse it's taken, but i can't seem to kill it.

I have a timex but it is the "old" wind up kind. No need to worry about batteries stopping at a bad time. I just wind it each morning and it "keeps on ticking"..look around at the local flea markets. I bought mine for $3 and wouldn't trade it for another kind. Good Luck !!

I have a Seiko one of my brothers bought during a tour of duty in Viet Nam in 1968. Self-winding, looses a couple of minutes every few days so I set it each morning. Had it cleaned twice in the past 40 years and its on its second Speidel twist band. He paid about $20 then.

I have a Timex Mickey Mouse railroad pocket watch that has kept perfect time for me for years. Being a pocket watch, its always safe out of the way in my pocket.

If I'm not wearing pockets, odds are I am involved in an activity that I will not be watching the clock while doing .

Is their plant still at the Little Rock Airport? Back many years ago, I was in on the design when the National Weather Service moved their Upper Air Balloon facility from there to the North Little Rock Airport. Remember the mad dash of the employees of Timex as if you didn't make it in the doors in time, you were locked out and didn't get paid for that day. Also, some of the friendly neighbors east of the airport kept shooting down the weather balloons with their .45. Good place to be a long ways from.

Nope they are in North Little Rock on Pile Avinue near the rail yards. The Little Rock plaint is not working at this time except for a maintance crew. My Wife used to be a secuarty for Little Rock Airport Maintance. That was before I retired and moved where I am now.

My Timex Ironman has been a good one. Been wearing it for about 2 yrs. using the original batteries and it keeps perfect time. It can take a lot of abuse without damage.

Another plug for Timex here. Had the first one for 18 years, was still running when I replaced it but was beat up pretty bad. Got the new one with the Indiglo (spelling?) for about $32 and I really like it. The numbers are big enough for an old feller to see, the light is bright enough to be useful at night, and it don't take a p.h.d. to set. Only gripe I got is they got fancy and included a date window on it and that's kinda hard to see.

Rolex Daytona in black chrome. An extremely good watch but I find that I rarely wear it anymore. It has sat in my drawer for months. I have a clock on my cellphone so I just don't wear a watch anymore. I should get rid of it and use the money for something useful but it has sentimental value to me.

I have actually used my Indiglo dial for path illumination when in unfamiliar territory and needing to walk somewhere.

I had forgotten that my watch has the day and date on it until I read your post. While it is currently showing correctly that it is Thursday, it is showing the 21st while it is May 1st. Guess that is a function that I don't use or need.

Yup, mine has the nice large numbers so that I can easily see them. I used the analog faced watches in preference over digital.

I set my watch to correspond to the US Naval Observatory Master Clock here: http://tycho.usno.navy.mil/time.html My watch is rarely more than 2 or 3 seconds off of the correct time. Hm, maybe I was a demanding railroad man in another lifetime.

Plain Timex with indiglo and a twist band. The one I have now has the date, a useless function I would not have chosen, it was a gift.

Thanks for the input everyone. I picked up a Timex this morning after researching the matter yesterday.

If anyone is interested, there are no American made watches, except for a few high-end, handcrafted shop running in the thousands of dollars

Go to: www.campmor.com Look into the "official site; look into watches Hot Deals and you will find two Timex watches on sale for $19.97. I am pretty hard on watches but these seem to, "Take a beating and keep on ticking". The models numbers I looked at are: #95488 and #95483.

While you are at it get the free catalog for more good products and prices.
